Robert Kenner's Film Food Inc.
Director Robert Kenner’s film Food Inc. asserts that there is a veil of secrecy perpetuated by the food industry that separates the consumer from the realities of how food is produced in the United States.

Keener supports his assertion by claiming science has contributed to the way food is produced, giving us engineered food and has negatively changed the way we eat.

The author’s purpose is to inform the audience in order to have the reader know the facts behind the veil of secrecy and know how food is made, that author wants the reader to also respond by demanding that certain safety measures be carried out in order to better protect us.

He also shows us how that if we just blindly accept it they will put our safety as a secondary objective and try to make money first. He shows us that most of our food comes from corn. He also tells us that 90% of supermarket foods have some sort of corn ingredient in them and 30% of land in the U.S. is being used to produce corn.

Larry Johnson, Director of Center for Crops Utilization Research, Iowa State University, says “We are now engineering our food” (Ch. #2) and “The biggest advance in years is High-Fructose corn syrup” (Ch.#2).

This quote proves science has contributed to the way food is produced, giving us engineered food and has negatively changed the way we eat.

In addition, Kenner supports this claim by explaining to us how Industry is making money of of food by growing this faster, fatter, bigger, and cheaper, to sell it at a profit to us the consumers.
Also by showing us how high fructose corn syrup or HFCS has negatively affected our diet. While there is no correlation between sugar intake and type 2 diabetes, the country that consumes the most HFCS has a higher percentage of type 2 diabetes. Eldon Roth in the Wall Street Journal “ ‘Pink Slime’ Libel to cost this country jobs” claims that Engineering our food has provided us with numerous safety standards that help us do things safely, efficiently and without incident.

Roth supports his claim by telling us that Beef Products Inc. (BPI) is recognized for food safety and will continue to invent new ways to make the world safe.

Eldon Roth President & CEO of BPI states Mr. Roth states that this meat filler is a marriage of science of technology. (C.#3).

This is evidence that event though we engineer our food science is there to make it safe and eatable like the meat

    Corn production has gone up due to the help of ammonia fertilizer. Corn farms do not practice organic agriculture. Crop yield has gone up four times compared to Ian and Curt’s ancestors in the early 1900’s with the help of fertilizers and herbicides to kill the weeds. The government subsidizes large farms to plant on more land and to buy out their neighbors if they do not want to grow crops. Farmers get rewarded for overproduction of cheap corn which keeps the production of corn going on full blast. Majority of the corn produced gets fed to animals or us in the form of high fructose corn syrup which is empty calories. Due to consolidation of family farms into large farming operations, the consumers are harmed while the cooperation benefit because they get cheap corn produced in surplus to turn into high fructose corn syrup or feed to sell to livestock producers. Consumers are harmed because more high fructose corn syrup is being produced and put into the foods we consume on a daily basis. Corn is in everything that we consume, such as sodas and hamburgers. High fructose corn syrup has adverse effects such as a higher risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes and obesity.
