Robert D. Russell In 1955, the Vietnam war, also known as the American war started. Officially the war was between North Vietnam and the South Vietnamese governments. There was 1,291,425 known deaths in this war. This war was one of the worst and ended on April 30, 1975. The 101st Airborne division played a role in this war, they flew air assault missions behind enemy lines. In 1965, Robert D. Russell joined the military. Robert joined the 101st Airborne. The 101st Airborne, during the Vietnam war landed at Cam Ranh Bay and carried out air assault missions. Robert carried out a total of 89 missions behind enemy lines. The 101st Airborne division stayed mostly in the Central Highlands and in the A Shau Valley. It was a major force in the battle

Russell, born February 19, 1947 in Kittery, Maine. Robert is my great uncle, he was a POW( Prisoner Of War). A war hero that earned one of the highest Honor of Medals. Robert stayed in the military until he retired a Master Sergeant in 1976. Robert loved to travel and had a hobby collecting art. Sunday, August 9, 2009 Robert passed away in his home in Hampton Virginia of a lengthy illness. A retired, decorated Vietnam Veteran. Robert always attended the 101st Airborne reunions. He earned a Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart with a Cluster. The Bronze Star Medal, a medal awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone. The Purple Heart is achieved when a member of the United States Armed Forces is wounded by an instrument of war or is killed in action. He was 62 years of age when he passed away. He had two kids live on, one son, Matthew C. Russell and one daughter, Melissa M. Russell and he had two labs. Robert D. Russell, a decorated war Veteran of Vietnam. He was a father of two children.
