Chapter 1: A hero was born!
A Hero’s Profile
Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda also known as “Pepe” was born in Calamba, Laguna (the cradle of a genius) on the 19th of June 1861 between the 11 o’clock to 12 midnight, a few days before the full moon. The birth of Rizal (The name Rizal means green field/new pasture) was attributed to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (a.k.a Virgin of Antipolo).
The baby boy was baptized by Rev. Rufino Callantes three days after his birth, and god-fathered by Rev. Pedro Casanas and attested by Rev. Leoncio Lopez. He was named “Jose” by his mother in honor of St. Joseph (the patron saint of the universal church)
Mercado (market) was the original surname of the Rizal family, which was adopted by Domingo Lam-co, the paternal ancestor. Francisco chose his own surname”Rizal” because it fits to his farming clan which means (ricial) green field or new pasture, although Rizal was not found on the list of the given Spanish surnames. And Jose was the first one to adopt the surname “Rizal” during his high school days, because the “Mercado” had come under suspicion of the Spanish authorities.
Rizal belongs to a middle class group called “ilustrados”. They were the firsts; to build a large stone houses in Calamba, to own a carruaje (horse-drawn carriage), to have a home library (1000 volumes) and to educate their children in colleges of Manila.
At the age of three, he began to take part on the family prayers and two years later he was able to read the Spanish family Bible. He is fond of going to church, to pray, to take part on novenas and religious procession.
As a teenager, he had his interest in reading especially on romantic novels. His 1st novel was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, and it was Edmund Dantes (the hero) who stirred Rizal’s deep imagination. José Rizal was a Filipino polymath, nationalist and the most prominent advocate for reforms in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era and its eventual independence from Spain. He is considered a national hero and the anniversary of Rizal's death is commemorated as a Philippine holiday called Rizal Day. Rizal's 1896 military trial and execution made him a martyr of the Philippine Revolution. He is the seventh of eleven children born to a middle class family in the town of Calamba, Laguna, Rizal attended the Ateneo Municipal de Manila and then traveled alone to Madrid, Spain where he studied medicine at the Universidad Central de Madrid, earning the degree of Licentiate in Medicine. He attended the University of Paris and earned a second doctorate at the the University of Heidelberg. Rizal was a polyglot conversant in at least ten languages. He was a prolific poet, essayist, diarist, correspondent, and novelist whose most famous works were his two novels, Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. These are social commentaries on the Philippines that formed the nucleus of literature that inspired dissent among peaceful reformists and spurred the militancy of armed revolutionaries against 333 years of Spanish rule. As a political figure, Rizal was the founder of La Liga Filipina, a civic organization that subsequently gave birth to the Katipunan led by Bonifacio and Aguinaldo. He was a proponent of institutional reforms by peaceful means rather than by violent revolution. The general consensus among Rizal scholars, however, attributed his martyred death as the catalyst that precipitated the Philippine Revolution.…
