Rise Of Christianity Research Paper
There are approximately a dozen major religions throughout the world, Christianity being the highest with two million followers. Christianity is a diverse religion that is intertwined with different beliefs; however, they all relate back to the same central belief. The branches that link off of the main root of Christianity include Catholicism, Protestantism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, Anglicanism, Restorationism and Nontrinitarianism. Inside each of these denominations include the groups such as Baptist or Roman Catholic. The complexity of the various denominations may seem overwhelming since they practice worship differently, but it is all intertwined into the religion of Christianity (ProCon.org). Between each of the different denominations of churches within the beliefs of Christians, they all come together to form similar beliefs (Koester). This religion was based off of Catholicism and separated during the Protestant Reform. This was set to happen in the 1555’s, challenging the belief that the Bible should be the source of spiritual authority (History.com). This action was made possible through the invention of the printing press, making the bible accessible to all. This changed everything for the Catholic Church in a way that they could no longer make up their own beliefs about God. Priest were able to say what they wanted because of the fact that people did not have access to Bibles. Once the people of the 15th century knew what was happening, they branched out, creating the Protestant Religion (Koester). Though, the Protestant Church is not much different to the Catholic Church today, they do have their differences.     There are only a few religions that can claim the adherence of large numbers of people. Geographers distinguish two types of religion: universalizing and ethnic. Universalizing religions attempt to become global, and appeal to all people, regardless of where they may live in the world, not just to those of one culture or location. An ethnic religion appeals primarily to one group of people living in a single place. “About sixty two percent of the world’s population adheres to a universalizing religion, twenty four to an ethnic religion, and fourteen percent to no religion”. The three main universalizing religions are Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. “Each of the three branches is divided into branches, denominations and sects. A branch is a large and fundamental division within a religion. A denomination is a division of a branch that unites a number of local congregations in a single legal and administrative body. A sect is a relatively small group that has broken away from an established denomination”. Christianity has two billion followers and has the most widespread distribution. It is the predominant religion in North America, South America, Europe, and Australia (countries with a Christian majority exist in Africa and Asia as well). “Christianity has three major branches: Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox. Roman Catholics comprise 53 percent of the world’s Christians, Protestants 21 percent, and Eastern Orthodox 10 percent”. Roman Catholicism is the dominant Christian branch within Europe. The Eastern Orthodox branch of Christianity is a collection of fourteen self-governing churches in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Roman Catholics make up ninety three percent of Christians in Latin America, compared with twenty nine percent in North America. “Within North America, Roman Catholics are clustered in the southwestern and northwestern United States and the Canadian province of Quebec”.     Christianity stared in Jerusalem, where the romans killed Jesus trying to stop his teaching from spreading. A persecution broke down against the Jewish Christians or nazarians who were Jesus followers, causing them to run out of Jerusalem into Syria and other countries making them spread. These persecutions were one of the causes why Christianity begins to spread a few hundredth miles from the city and the establishments of churches. Paul of Tarsus a Hebrew who at first persecuted the followers of Jesus of Nazareth and violently tried to destroy the newly forming Christian church turned a missionary who evangelized the gospels of Christ. This happened after he saw the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus. Paul traveled the Mediterranean world, establishing churches around different cities, and persuading others about Jesus. Paul went to the Jewish in the synagogues and used their scriptures to explain the Jewish with Jesus was the messiah. He also went to the non-Jewish or gentile making a more rational emphasis with the idea of the resurrection. After these gospels provided by Paul, Peter and others, majority of gentiles started to believe in Christianity. The idea being spread in the gospel was that by the believing in Jesus you could restore to God. This was transcultural because people didn’t need to be Jewish to become Christian, making Christianity more available to gentiles. Christianity was also universal; there were no restrictions to become a Christian. People could be rich, plebian, uneducated, educated, poor, Chinese, privileged class etc. still could become Christians. They had to believe that Jesus arose from the dead.
