Rikki-Tavi: A Cobra's Worst Nightmare
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a little beast, a cobra’s worst nightmare, the king of mongooses. Which is why he has every right to be proud of himself. He killed three snakes, saved three humans, and saved two birds as well as the rest of the garden. If anyone has a right to be proud of themselves, then it’s him.

Rikki-Tikki killed three snakes. One of the snakes was really hard to kill because it was so small. It was as quick as lighting and Rikki had to bite him right behind the head which would be extremely hard. The other two were Nag and Nagaina, two very large snakes who pretty much rule over the garden. First when Nag attacks Rikki’s family, Rikki bites him on the head and kills him. Then when Nagaina threatens to attack his family, Rikki kills

When fighting with Nagaina, she went down to a hole “and she plunged into the rat hole where she and Nag used to live, his little white teeth were clenched on her tail and he went down with her and very few mongooses- however wise and old they maybe, care to go into the hole.” (27) This shows how brave Rikki-tikki was since none of the mongooses will ever go down, but he did because “Rikki-tikki knew he must catch her or all the trouble will begin again.” (26) Another time he showed bravery was when Nag was in the water jug he risked his life to jump in there and hold on. “Then he jumped. The head was lying a little clear from the water jar, under the curve of it; and as his teeth, Rikki braced his back against the bulge of the red earthenware to hold down the head. This gave him one second purchase, and he made the most of it. Then he was battered to and fro as a rat shaken by a dog…..” (22) He could of just let go,but he chose not to and wait into the humans killed Nag completely. This shows how brave he was.…

When the man first comes upon the snake the “head wasn’t not drawn back to strike” and “was not even rattling yet, much less coiled." This was a sign that the snake wasn’t going to attack the man but was merely watching to see what the man was going to do. When the man got his hoe to attack the snake with it “shot into a dense bush”. The snake’s action shows his nonviolent behavior by defending itself another way then just attacking the man. Then the snake “shook his fair but furious signal, quite sportingly”. It’s warning the man that if he continued further he has no choice but to attack. But soon the man “hacked about, soon dragged him out of it with his back…

The novel Ransom challenges our understanding of what it means to be heroic. David Malouf shows that there are greater acts of courage than those achieved in battle. He argues that it takes great courage to break free of convention and expectation. Both Priam and Achilles are expected to behave in a certain way. They have become symbols to the people who surround them, images of the ideal king and the ideal warrior. Priam’s bold decision to put aside this royal image allows both men to achieve a sense of peace and freedom. As the reader follows Priam’s quest they are introduced to Somax the carter and the women who prepare Hector’s…

Humans have always feared strangers one time or another in life, but how could the strangers be allowed to prove themselves to be a hero to others if they are just feared, ignored, hated, or avoided? They cannot show any evidence of heroism if they are treated with utmost acerbity. The theme that every story needs a hero is very prevalent in the story of Rango. In Rango, the townspeople of Dirt are looking for a hero to assist them in their quest to recover their water. Rango becomes the figure that everyone apotheosizes and idolizes. Moreover, the idea that every story needs a hero is reinforced by the Mayor’s crime of stealing the water and the ensuing problem that the inhabitants of Dirt encounter. This provides the chance for Rango to become a liberator to the population of Dirt.…
