Comparison/contrast
This particular poem about "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson, reminds me of the saying "don't judge people. You never know what kind of battle they are fighting." People that knew Richard saw him as a rich man that anyone could wish to live his life. Everyone thought he was living a perfect life, because he was wealthy, good looking and respected by everyone. However In fact, as much as everyone wish to be in his position, it was exactly the opposite if anyone was to put their selves in his shoes. People around Richard did not know what he was actually going through, that is why they would envy him for the way he was from the outside without knowing his actual inside. Even though Richard Cory was rich and respected, the author states at the end of the poem
"and Richard Cory, one calm summer night, went home and put a bullet through his head."
Meaning that his life wasn't as perfect as everyone thought it was. Apparently he was going through unbearable situation. For example, it could have been a lack of finding his life partner, maybe someone found out his top secrets, or maybe he was really sick of his "real" personality, yes "real" personality, because everyone of us might have two personalities, one toward people; and another one toward their selves. Regardless, we are almost sure that
Richard's life was not the way everyone thought it was. Otherwise he wouldn't end up suiciding. Therefore people should not judge or envy upon other people's life,however they should appreciate their life.
