The Success of Richard Branson and His Influence on Management Richard Branson was a young entrepreneur, who became a billionaire. Branson success was achieved through personal goals. His personal goals lead him to business goals. He obtained his business goals, by using his everyday experiences among interaction with people to his organizations. Richard used management skills, management challenges, and the management process, (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling) everyday to insure his accomplishments. Management skills consist of three skills: technical skills, human skills, and conceptual skills. Technical skills are the ability to performance at tasks with expertise. Human skills are the ability to work well with others. A conceptual skill is the ability to think analytically and solve complex problems. Managerial competency is skill-based capability for high performance in a management job using communication, teamwork, self-management, leadership, critical thinking, and professionalism. Branson was successful because he understood the management principles and took full advantage of lifelong learning in all aspects of our daily experience and job opportunities, as he has shown by Student magazine, Virgin-discount music, Virgin Records, Virgin Airlines a.k.a. Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin Group Ltd. Richard Branson’s management skills and managerial competencies have enabled him to his collection of companies under the brand “Virgins.” Branson management skills influenced his businesses; one example is the Virgin Group’s main focus was to provide services rather than producing products, this lead to customer appreciation and good business publicity. In the 1990’s in Branson’s career, he decided involve Virgin Atlantic with Internet access. The Internet

    Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group has been a household name in the United Kingdom for over twenty years. He is well respected in the business world. He is the founder of the Virgin Group, which is known for many different things such as cell phones, record labels, airlines and many more. “Branson is also known for his unique character and leadership styles, one who is not afraid to take risks, and believes that people are the foundation to his company's success. If I were to first characterize his leadership style I would say he is definitely a democratic leader. He truly feels that getting other peoples input and listening to what people have to say are a core value to him. He carries a notebook in his pocket all the time just in case he hears something interesting from people that he interacts with on any level. Whether it be an employee, friend, business partner or complete stranger, for him he knows that good ideas can come from anywhere and anytime (Leadership Styles, 2006).” According to Psychologist Kurt Lewin, democratic leaders make the final decisions, but they include team members in the decision-making process. They encourage creativity, and people are often highly engaged in projects and decisions. As a result, team members tend to have high job satisfaction and high productivity. This is not always an effective style to use, though, when you need to make a quick decision. The business dictionary website corresponds in its meaning of a democratic leadership style stating that the style involves a team where all persons are included in the decision-making process as well as the procedural course of action. According to an article in Entrepreneur, there is almost nothing Richard Branson won’t do to promote his company.
