Rhetorical Analysis On Reddit
Here is our paper that we produced for the group project. Our topic was on the analysis of the moderation processes on Reddit. I have added the introduction and my portion on oversharing.
Introduction
The integrative social networking platform Reddit combines modern pop culture into a registered discussion website. Established only twelve years ago, Reddit is a functional worldwide website that allows its users to submit and comment content in the form of text posts, images, or direct links. Reddit organizes itself through forums which are then categorized into larger forums called subreddits. Specifically, we will be trying to answer the question, “Should web communities such as Reddit, be monitored or controlled – if so, how much, and under what circumstances?” The second question we are hoping to explore is, “Should Reddit have stronger expectations from its users regarding respect for other users and their privacy?” Each author is entering this analysis with limited knowledge to the platform, which allows us to explore the rhetorical constructs of Reddit from an unbiased perspective. Understanding how virtual communicative technologies function is an essential aspect of modern social patterns. An intriguing aspect we will be analyzing further about Reddit is how it moderates its content through participatory policymaking to maintain the idea of a healthy community. Other topics that we’ll explore include: the concept of oversharing, and how it has become problematic on digitalized social communities such as Reddit; complex breaches of privacy due to piracy; and admin intervention regarding cyber bullying. Supported by communication theories and virtual artifacts from Reddit itself, we will grasp how the sub-communities of Reddit work towards creating an idealized …show more content…
Reddit is an online forum that allows its users to post about certain topics within procreated subject areas and adding comments to other people’s posts. It is common for online communities to have oversharing and Reddit is a prime example of that. Reddit allows people to post their thoughts and ideas about a certain topic or news that others might also be interested in. An issue with that is people tend to overshare these ideas beyond casual conversation. When people are sharing intimate details about themselves in regards to their location, their interests – they are revealing parts of their person that one would not normally share. The act of oversharing can cause individuals on this website to feel a sense of closeness due to opening up to other users. With the easiness of Reddit, it is easy to overshare without even knowing, but this is time leads to a person essentially abandoning their
