Death of the Unappealing Article Sitting down at his computer writing his argumentative essay about the death penalty, Kyle Gibson, the author of “Death penalty Repeal: It is Necessary to Use Capital Punishment in a Free World Image Credit: ilawyerblog.com” (Gibson, 2013), does a very good job stating his opinion about the death penalty and why he thinks it should be enforced, but does not seem credible doing so. Although he is very appealing to the people who are for the death penalty, he could have done a better job reaching out to those who are against the death penalty. It is important as a writer that he appeals to his audience in every way possible emotionally, statistically and credibly to persuade his readers into agreeing with his opinion. Although Kyle Gibson does a great job with Pathos, he could do a better job with bringing out Logos and Ethos in his editorial.
Through his writing it seems that Kyle Gibson is a middle aged American male; he graduated from University of Virginia, with a bachelor degree of Arts in Economics. The way he writes and his word choice is exceptional, so readers can see that he is well educated. Giving information on the area he grew up in, Alexandria, Virginia, it seems like he is a part of the upper class. Giving this information about Gibson tells us that he is really not very credible towards the subject of the death penalty. Throughout the article, Gibson focuses on the emotions that lie behind the death penalty. Gibson (2013) targets families that have gone through the process of failing to get the death penalty enforced on a murderer by saying “In many cases, capital punishment provides the only form of closure and a peace of mind as it disconnects the victim’s peers from the murderer” (para.5). He uses words such as “retributive” focusing the death penalty on morals, and “penal” implying that the death penalty is the correct way to punish criminals. Gibson
