Rhetorical Analyses You usually don’t see baby’s riding an airplane in first class, getting tailored suits, being the best man at a wedding, and sitting next to a pile of money. But the people at E Trade had a different idea. E Trade is an online company that allows you to trade stocks and bonds online. People come to E Trade to make more money or plan for the future, starting late in the 2000’s E Trade started an advertisement campaign to inform more people about their website. To bring more attention to their website E Trade brought in a talking a baby to their commercials. In the E Trade baby commercials the baby in the commercial tries to show how E Trade is the best online investing company by using ethos and pathos. Using these appeals the author builds credibility by mentioning features about the website and showing nice things, also the author shows an emotional appeal by using a talking baby, creative music, and by also making the commercials funny. Messy, silly, and naive, these are some words you could use to describe a baby. E Trade knew this very well, and knew they would have to build the credibility of the baby so people could still take them seriously. In one of the first earlier commercials “Tailor” the E Trade talking baby is getting measurements taken buy a guy named Enzo. The baby then goes on to talk about how Enzo was confused at first when he started to use E Trade but then began to soon understand it after watching tutorial videos and using costumer support. Having little information like that built the babies ethos or credibility because he mentioned multiple features the website has to offer. Another way the E Trade commercials show ethos is in the commercial E Trade “Save It”. In this particular E Trade commercial the baby has a pile of money next him and acts like that’s his 401k fund, but then goes on to a slide show on the many ways someone could spend their money.     Music is a medium in which people can express their feelings, as well as get many strong messages across efficiently. This is seen frequently in the music industry along with many bands. take this as an initiative to spread a message they find important. The Black Eyed Peas are a band notorious for this type of social communication. This is a band that believes in social change as well as equality in the world. Many of their songs portray similar core values and express many reoccurring themes. The targeted audience of their songs is the youth. Their music promotes action for change. The Black Eyed Peas specifically call to action on certain issues such as believe the young being corrupt by society and we all must start the movement. One specific song, paired with its music video inspires many of these common threads. The song, “Where is the Love?” does an excellent job tying together many serious issues into a fluid musical piece paired with symbolic images. This music video is getting the message out that change in the world starts with the individual. With these images and sounds, The Black Eyed Peas are able to tackle and reflect on large social conflicts in a relaxing and inspiring way. “Where is the Love?” effectively touches upon may themes including, faith and hopelessness, hypocrisy and corrupted youth through images, poetic words, as well as the rhythm mood and tempo they play the music and these can be interpreted through ethos, logos and pathos. Through the Rhetorical Triangle analysis style, I will investigate what has been mentioned and how the combination of images and sounds effectively communicate many powerful messages, especially for the short amount of time.     In the late 1940’s through the late 1950’s McCarthyism was a wide spread epidemic here in America. The government had a very intense suspicion that there were influences of communism on our soil. Many were accused and prosecuted for “un-American activities” throughout the states. The FBI had no grounds or evidence to stand on when accusing these people. The Salem witch trials in The Crucible were very similar to these situations. Witten by Arthur Miller The Crucible was Miller’s way of protesting and speaking out against these trials while trying not to draw any attention to him.     Texting and driving is one of the most debated topics in society. Whether it affects all people or whether or not you’re just good at multi tasking. Yet, all people would come to the agreement that it is one the most dangerous activities to participate in and ends millions of lives yearly. "Drivers and Legislators Dismiss Cellphone Risks” published in New York Times by Matt Richtel and "LOL? Texting While Driving Is No Laughing Matter: Proposing a Coordinated Response to Curb this Dangerous Activity" by Alexis M. Farris are two articles that present variations of ethos, pathos, and logos and make identical arguments claiming that texting and driving is not only dangerous but is shaping the way Americans live.     The fact that he is talking about how these big businesses are targeting are younger generations is an emotional appeal in itself. I think it sends off a feeling of helplessness to parents because these advertisements are everywhere and you cannot shield your child from it. These businesses are using a method that they call “cradle-to-grave” which means that if the business gets you hooked on buying it as a kid, you will most likely buy it for the rest of your life (Pg.520).     There are a numerous number of well-known corporations that spend over millions of dollars each year in marketing and advertising. Of this amount, an enormous quantity is spent on marketing and advertising directly to children. Corporations have recognized the impact children make when it comes to influencing their parents to purchase a particular product for them. Therefore, a large portion of marketing and advertising is focused on the child consumer rather than the adult consumer.
