Literature Review on RFID Technology

Thomas Davis

REU Jackson State 2010

Abstract

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is one of the most exciting technologies that revolutionize the working practices by increasing efficiencies, and improving profitability. It is often presented as a replacement for today’s barcodes, but the technology has much greater possibilities, such as individual serial numbers for each item, and the possibility to read these numbers at a distance of several meters. They are simpler to deploy than wired solutions and these networks will enable improved understanding of processes and environments through continual monitoring of a larger set of parameters. In this project the evolution of wireless sensor networks will be presented, using RFID techniques with examples of implementations in payment of certain items without using the Universal Product Code (UPC). A virtual database comprising of RFID tags, antennae and experimental setup will be created and verified to make sure the proper amount is deducted from the correct item. The project I want to implement will fetch added features like speed in transaction, cost efficiency, low frequency of errors, etc. Another added feature will be the accuracy of the data recorded. Human errors will be resolved to the maximum thereby improving the efficiency of the system. The old-fashioned system of scanning items and manual entry can be removed and this method could be adopted to bring into action a more efficient system. The application should recognize all items in a shopping cart with the RFID tags and should communicate with an electronic reader that will detect every item in the cart and the sum will be calculated for all appropriate items. After the calculation, the reader will be connected to a large network that will send information on your products to the retailer. Your bank will then be notified and the amount of the bill

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips are small radio-frequency electromagnetic fields that can be used in a product, animal, and humans to track location, transfer data, and to identify the object. These chips are as small as a grain of rice and can store over 2,000 bytes of data. Some chips are powered by and read at short ranges via magnetic fields (electromagnetic induction). Certain chips use a local power source like a battery and some others that don’t use a local battery get the energy from interrogating electromagnetic fields and then act as a passive transponder to emit microwaves. RFID chips have been around for a very long time, but a lot of people don’t know what they are used for and what they are used in.…

As a major company supplying to large home improvement stores such as Home Depot, and Lowe’s, I believe that for efficiency, accuracy, availability, and most importantly; profit, we should adopt to the Radio Frequency Identification system, a/k/a RFID. With technology improving in our everyday live, we should take advantage and utilize it for our business needs. The paper and clipboard method seems to be inefficient, and less accurate in terms of recording and reporting inventory that is incoming or outgoing. With RFID, the benefits are great and are many, but I will only list the main ones; we can be sure that we save man time, have real-life access to our inventory, a more accurate cycle count of our inventory, and most importantly, an accurate amount of count that is leaving our inventory. There are also many factors that should be considered before adapting this RFID technology system into our company, such as; System costs, Software, One size fit all system.…

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an emerging technology that can be applied to a variety of disciplines to track inventory, manage personnel, identify data elements, as well as perform many other tasks or services. Any basic RFID system consists of a tag, a reader, and software which can be used to interact with the RFID device. This software filters, aggregates, and uses the RFID data to support that organization’s day to day functions. The premise is certainly not new technology, but rather a technological advancement of bar-coding. Recently, RFID technology has found its way into the healthcare setting, particularly in the field of medical records. Although in its infancy, RFID technology has a shown great potential to considerably reduce cost, increase patient safety, and improve the quality of care. Although it has many uses in a healthcare organization, this paper will focus on RFIDs and the medical record. The focus of this report will be on the uses, issues, and impacts of the human implantable RFID chip and the traditional RFID system.…
