Writing a review: ‘What did the fox say?’
‘What did the fox say?’ is the new music video that has gone viral across the internet. Now stated to be Norway’s ‘song of the summer’ it is an infectious tune that has had over 100 million views on YouTube, and rising. The song, written by comedy due Ylvis (Norwegian brothers), has had a huge hit on the media, topping charts and mesmerizing crowds. It is sure that the two Norwegian have made slight profit of it. The musical hit has left the public question ‘what does a fox say’, as well as one of the catchiest tunes this year.
But what is the message Ylvis is trying to get across; the mockery of recent album releases or the true question behind what a fox would say?
The song includes a very basic array of descriptive wording and the odd simile “Your fur is red, so beautiful, like an angel in disguise”, to add to the whacky, stereotypical beat to any modern party songs. Throughout the video, we are shown a variety of scenes which include at least one of the brothers. But in this case, it is possibly more of an answer to the craziness off modern day music culture. With some scenes relating to songs from famous singles by artist such as Justin Bieber or PSY the lyrics add to the level of mockery. The element of satire stands out the most within this music video with mocking taking place left right and centre. Therefore, the viral music video has possibly made it viral due to the simplicity of satire comedy thought up by the two Norwegian brothers. Their video has laughed and joked at ‘cheesy’ and popular music of our day and age and regurgitated back out in the eyes of comedy and mockery.
When it comes to the detail of the video itself, it shows us a variety of techniques used in modern media today but organised in a slightly different way by the comedians to get their message across. Scenes included professional pyrotechnics, co-ordinated dance routines and some peculiar dress choices. With the odd over-emotional verse of the song, it has a very common upbeat rhythm to it, extremely catchy.
The success of the two Norwegian brothers is a great example of how simple and basic it is to claim economic success as well as an increase of enthusiastic people singing along to a basic, yet catchy song. In my eyes, the song is an obvious success. Not only has it used satire comedy to a non-offensive extent, it has also given the humans of this planet another intoxicating tune stuck into their brain. And also, possibly, supported the advertisement the Norway’s silent media business.

This and the use of incorrect grammer, so common to rebellious teenagers, helps portray the message of the song, which is that today’s youth are prisoners of the older generations society, which alienate the younger generation and instead of looking for support and comfort, they thrive to rebel against these rules and law enforcement bodies, with the institution of society having no effect on the younger generation as they don’t comply and don’t want to reform. This creates the younger generations culture, arguing they are their own society.…

Prominent protest songs of the 21st century are often found in genera’s containing boldly outspoken and poetically powerful lyrics such as contemporary rap and hip hop. However, a female country duo who debuted their first album in 2015 is stirring the gender inequality pot by crafting their music with brutal honesty. Maddie and Tae, two twenty-one year olds from Nashville, Tennessee, have dampened the burning fire in modern country music, referred to as “Bro Country.” These two ladies have taken a stance with their hit track, “Girl in a Country Song,” rebelling against the norms of society and shedding light on gender inequality through the power of protest music.…

As well as raising awareness for the equality of homosexuals, the song also points out the fact that the word ‘’gay’’ is used as a derogative term in not just the music industry but also in the world, that the word “gay” has lost all its original meaning and is instead used in our everyday vocabulary because it has been embedded in our culture. (“We become so numb to what we’re saying” )…

The video opens by introducing who will be sharing their opinions throughout the video. It introduces us to Melyssa Ford, who is a model, Irv Gotti, who is a record executive, Kendra G, who is a radio show host, and Kevin Powell, who is a writer and activist. The first topic they cover is “walking bling”. The host opens by showing examples of how women are shown in hip hop music videos. She looks into clips from both a 50 cent video and a Jay Z video. Both videos show females in small clothes, out numbering the males in the videos. This strengthens the host’s point that the girls might be looked at as “walking bling”. As she states, they may be looked at as nothing more than “adornments; much like jewelry.” Females in music videos are sometimes used just as an object. They represent a prize or something that can be obtained once you reach a certain level of stardom. According to http://onlinethics.wordpress.com/2012/10/21/the-representation-of-women-in-hip-hop-and-rap-videos/ , “ Women are ever so often there as mere sexual objects, dancing provocatively in revealing clothing, demonstrating sexual innuendos with their bodies’ movements, present in the clips entirely for the heterosexual male artists and viewers’ satisfaction. With that being their primary, and pretty much only purpose of being in the video, they are not so much full blown human…

For example, rather than degrading women, this song is elaborating on how society and the media have brainwashed women to believe that their looks and weight are more important than their knowledge. With that said, in the beginning of the video, one will see a little girl watching television. When the little girl turns on the T.V. she sees two beautiful women putting on makeup. Then, as the little girl is still watching television, we see a beautiful, skinny woman, who is obviously ditzy and has money to buy name brand clothing, getting a lot of attention from a man. At this time, the little girl sees and believes that, according to society, women will get a lot of attention from men, and have money if she is, unrealistically, skinny and beautiful. Although, the little girl then takes a stand and says “I don’t wanna be a stupid girl.” This means she does not want to be a women like the girls throughout the media. To me, this is important for women and especially young girls to see because the song, and my music video, is saying that it is okay to be different and one does not have to follow the norms of an i”deal women” like is portrayed all over television and popular…

In the musical parody perform this way by weird al yankervitch this song is a very different song but it does show satire by addressing that lady gaga is not actually how she is she just performs how she is. In lady gaga’s hit song born this way it tells you that she was born the way she is but in the parody it tells you know you’re not born that way you just putting it on for the public. Also it easily recognisable because she just dresses up the way she does in these wacko costumes it also makes fun of the costumes in the clip but in the visuals.…

Lady Gaga came into performance after her first album “The Fame” was released in 2008. It included the hit “Bad Romance” and that album sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Gaga is also recognized for her unique sense of fashion, Performance, and music videos. She was included in Times annual list of the most influential people in the world. Forbes also placed her in number seven in their annual’s list of the world’s 100 most powerful women. Bad Romance was one of her first music videos, it is a very symbolic and it has many hidden messages. In this music video Gaga describes the dark side of the music industry symbolically by representing herself as a sex slave. The main message in this music video is, Gaga is willing to do anything in order to get into the music industry, even if that means she’ll become a sex slave. Listening to the song itself makes us think that she is in love with some psycho, but watching the video makes it clear that, in fact she is in love with the fame that she will get in the music industry. There were many technical features in it like filming and also the fact that it was so influenced by fashion. Another thing would be the content of the video which actually represented Gaga and the women with her as sex slaves. One other thing to consider would be the story of the video and how it illustrates the lyrics of the song in an odd way.…

    Gender in Country Music

Throughout history men and women have played different roles in music. Today is no different. With the development of the music video, these different roles were magnified. From rap to country, men and women play roles. DreamWorlds 3: Sex, Desire, and Power in Music Video explores the world of music video. Women are seen as sex symbols that simply must have sex and will submit to any fantasy that a man may have. This is mostly displayed in rap music. DreamWorlds 3 also talks about the language used. Again, it is mostly displayed in rap, and the language is very vulgar. Country music is different. According to research by Julie Andsager and Kimberley Roe, country music sang by men portrays traditional gender messages, and country music sang by women portrays both traditional messages and progressive messages. They studied music from 1997, country music’s “Year of the Woman.” There are numerous examples of this, but I chose to analyze one song, I’m still a Guy. I believe this song shows how mainstream male country music reinforces traditional gender messages. Content analysis does not tell the whole story about the portrayal of females in country music, and I will explore this after.…
