What activity are you simulating when you click the ERV button? What additional muscles are used?
Maximal exhalation; internal intercostal and abdominal wall muscles

What does the pump rate simulate?
The number of beats per minute (BPM) stimulates respiratory rate

How did changing the radius effect FEV (%)?
FEV decreased in response to decrease in radius

What effect does the addition of surfactant have on the airflow?
AIrflow increases because resistance is reduced.

Why does surfactant affect airflow?
It decreases surface tension in the alveoli making it easier for the alveoli to increase surface area for gas exchange.

Why do premature infants have difficulty breathing?
Premature infants don't produce surfactant or produce a very small amount.

What effect does opening the valve have on the left lung? Why does this happen?
The left lungs collapsed because intrapleural and atmospheric pressure equaled.

What condition does opening the valve simulate?
Pneumothorax

What is the pressure in the left lung when the valve is opened?
Zero

What happned to the total flow when the valve was opened?
Reduced significantly

When the reset button was clicked, what procedure would be used with real lungs?
Insertion of a chest tube, which removes air from the pleural cavity.

How is the PCO2 in rapid breathing compare with normal breathing?
PCO2 is LOWER in rapid breathing because more CO2 is expelled.

What happned to the rate of respirations with rebreathing? Why?
Rate of respiration was FASTER; because increase in CO2 causes an increase in breathing rate.

How was PCO2 with breath holding?
PCO2 significantly increased during breath holding then decreased when normal breathing resumed.

Was there a change in the rate of respiration when breath holding was resumed?
Yes. The rate of respiration INCREASED.

What effect did "emphysema breathing" have on FCV and FEV?
Both FCV and FEV DECREASED

Ants may lay pheromone trails when travelling from the nest to food, or from food to the nest, or when travelling in either direction depending on the species. They also follow these trails with a allegiance which is a function of the trail strength, among other variables. Ants drop pheromones as they walk by stopping briefly and touching their gaster, which carries the pheromone secreting gland, on the ground. The strength of the trail they lay is a function of the rate at which they make deposits, and the amount per deposit. Since pheromones evaporate and diffuse away, the strength of the trail when it is encountered by another ant is a function of the original strength, and the time since the trail…

The scenario in exercise 17.8 illustrates a healthcare situation where the needs of the patients are diverse. I think the progressive care model best suits this scenario because it will make it possible for each patient to be given an exclusive care that depends on the severity of his or her illness. This will allow the patients to regain their health entirely and get along with their lives as usual. Also, with the progressive care model, establishing patient units based on the individual extents at which they need healthcare services will be an important way to manage the patients. The most important aspect of the progressive model to be used in this situation is that even in the various units, it lays the ground for each patient…

Therefore, the increase in PCO2 will lower the pH due to increase in hydrogen ions, activating the central chemoreceptors to stimulate the Dorsal (DRG) and Ventral Respiratory group (VRG) which reflexly increase ventilation. Furthermore, the peripheral chemoreceptors located on the carotid arteries and aortic bodies is also responsible for detecting changes in arterial PCO2. Therefore, the human body tend to favour the hypercapnic drive, where response for increased ventilation occurs to exhale excess carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as arterial and brain PCO2 levels exceeds the response level of…
