The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a story about Hester Prynne, her husband Roger Chillingworth and the minister that she had an affair with Roger Chillingworth. There are many strong feelings displayed throughout this novel such as revenge and forgiveness. The most prevalent feeling throughout this story is love. All the principal characters love someone and depend on them. All in all, The Scarlet Letter belongs in the romance novel genre because all of the characters are primarily influenced by love. Beginning before the timeframe of the story, Chillingworth loves and marries Hester. Chillingworth’s actions are all fueled by his love for Hester. Their love forces Hester to cheat on her husband and get pregnant with Dimmesdale. Most of the story is about Hester and Dimmesdale trying to live happily together. That is all they care about because they can only think about the love that they share. Ultimately, the entire plot structure of the novel is formed because of everybody’s love for eachother. As a result of Hester and Dimmesdale’s affair, Hester gives birth to her daughter Pearl. Hester has great maternal instincts while raising Pearl. She is able to raise Pearl into an astute young girl while being viewed as an outcast by the rest of the town. The love that a mother has for her child is incomparable to any other feeling in the world. That is true love and there is almost nothing stronger than that. In short, Hester’s entire character development is a result of her love for the characters in the story. To sum up, The Scarlet Letter is a love story because all of the main characters are in love. For example, Chillingworth is so in love with his wife Hester that it drives him insane. In addition, Dimmesdale and Hester’s love for eachother is powerful enough to fuel an affair and an unintended child to be born.
