"Letter From Birmingham Jail" Essay Response Martin Luther King Jr. wrote in his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” claiming “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection”. This was the view King had on white people who supported racial equality but initiated no action pertaining to it. Through previous experiences in my life, I disagree with King's statement, believing it as false. “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will” is the first part of King’s statement. I do not agree with

In my opinion, having the other agree with you even a little bit is more satisfying then complete and utter disagreement. For example, my friend Kristy and I love to discuss our favorite music while riding the bus to school to pass the time. Whenever we have different views on a subject of debate, we argue about it trying to convince the other to change their views to agree with our own. Whenever I am successful, even just a little, at persuading her that I am correct, I achieved a feeling of accomplishment. This feeling is greater than the feeling of disappointment I get when she still sticks to her original beliefs. The second part of King’s observation, “Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection” is another statement that I disagree with. It is in human

2 nature to want to be accepted by another group of people. Rejection is one feeling that no human would ever hope for. My experience trying out for the soccer team is a perfect example of why
“lukewarm acceptance” is better than “outright rejection”. The first year I tried out I did not

Martin Luther King's "A letter from Birmingham jail" was written in response to a published statement by eight fellow clergymen from Alabama who seriously criticized King for organization and participation in the protest march against segregation in Birmingham. King's letter was an attempt to defend himself from these accusations and to criticize white heads and moderators of the church. In the begging parts of the letter, Martin Luther King tries to reject the accusation of being an outsider in Birmingham. He also goes against the accusations that the protests where “untimely” by stating several reasons why this was appropriate time for…

King views emphasizes the points of all these great people. First, let’s take Plato for instance, Plato teaches people to doubt and ask questions in order to justify the claim. If there are no concrete evidence then there is a reason to doubt. Also if there is one reason to doubt a claim, then it can be doubted as a whole too. Therefore with that said, king at some point in the “Letter from Birmingham jail” says that he was disappointed when the leaders of the church said that freedom will definitely come at some point eventually. Meaning they really did not take their bible studies as they should, in the bible there is no type of racial segregation. Therefore no believing man or woman should be part of an injustice. However, the church members should be the ones that doubt the laws of the nation, if they are true believers. That is the disappointment King spoke about. The he said he hope that one day there will be true…

address the criticism of the white clergymen by claiming that the path to brotherhood is nonviolent direct action. He developed this statement by claiming that, “Unjust laws are now laws at all,” “‘Wait’ have almost means ‘no’” and, “Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever.” Throughout the story, King uses many rhetorical devices to help develop and refine his…

Everyone has a different opinion, because everyone has a different view about every issue. Most of our worldly problems today revolve around people disagreeing. Although, my topic was just resolved last week, it is still an argument amongst many people. The death of Sandra Bland, and the $1.9 million wrongful death suit her family will receive. This is an obvious argument for many people, not only in Texas, but it has the whole world talking.…

In friendly environments it is not simple to develop a meaningful relationship because of differing interests, beliefs and thinking strategies. When a friend presents us with an issue we tend not to offer as much emotional support as we do strategies to solve the problem. While to us a strategy to solve the problem would be the best thing for us to hear, for most others they desire someone to be there for them emotionally and help them to work through emotionally rather than rationally. It is entirely possible to have a wonderful relationship with an ENTP but it is important that the other person is aware of the potential for tension and offense. Struggles in personal relationships with debaters can be improved by limiting conversation topics and by willingly working on communication. In the professional environment it is easier for debaters to thrive if they hold a position of power or, a job that benefits from our rational thinking. When these conditions are not met keeping a job is nearly impossible for an ENTP because we are seen as disrespectful or a disruption to progress. This is why it is imperative to learn to argue points in a respectful manner, consider all points equally, and to collaborate with a diverse group of…

One seemingly convincing argument and people’s stances are set. After that, much of the discussions are more to prove the other side of the argument is wrong than to try to reach a desired common ground based on reasoning or evidence. From what I’ve seen, the high number of ‘likes’ from like-minded friends can raise the proponent’s…

It is a fact that every individual argues at some point and such argument can be the breaking point for this behavioral trait to be assumed. People do not listen to understand, they listen “for weakness in logic to leap on, point they can dissert to make others look bad” (Tannen). I consider myself an introvert person, since I sort everything out by scrutinizing my ideas and exploring the different points of viewed aroused by my behavior; therefore, when I get myself involved in an argument I know where I stand. A Greek philosopher once said, "In argument, truth is born." Even though sometimes feelings and emotions come into play that confuse the issue at hand, usually an argument results in a new insight on the subject. Even if a person holds strong views that are unshaken by anything his adversary may say, he may nevertheless gain from the debate. It forces him to organize and analyze his views, leaving him with a clearer understanding of the subject than before. Further, his opponent's arguments help him better appreciate his views and their differences. Finally, the argument forces both to look inwards, at their character and value system.…
