FILM: BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID

1. Give the full title of the film - what exactly is its subject, and what time period and/or places does it cover?

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a 1969 American Western film directed by George Roy Hill and written by William Goldman who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film. The film tells the story of Wild West outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker, known to history as and his partner Harry Longabaugh, the "Sundance Kid" as they migrate to Bolivia while on the run from the law in search of a more successful criminal career.

2. Who are the major personalities or groups of people featured in the film?

Butch Cassidy is a consummate dreamer, one minute thinking of relocating to Bolivia and the next considering enlisting in the Army. His partner Sundance is more of a traditional old-west gunman. Sundance’s female companion is the schoolteacher Etta Place, who never seems to question the duo’s life of crime.

3. Describe three (3) major events that occur in the film. Why were these important?

1.Witty pals and Sundance join the Gang in successfully robbing yet another train with their trademark non-lethal style. Butch and Sundance are soon holed up in a barn surrounded by scores of Bolivian soldiers who are waiting for the pair to make one last run for it. 2.They take cover in a building, but are both seriously wounded when Butch has to make a run to the mules for more ammunition. As dozens of Bolivian soldiers surround the area, Butch suggests the duo's next destination should be Australia. 3.The film ends with a freeze frame shot on the pair charging out of the building, guns blazing, as the Bolivian forces fire repeatedly on them. I chose these scenes because these scenes were important and these scenes started the chain of effects in the movie ( starting, climax, end). The final scene serves as the ultimate symbol for the youth. The film

I enjoyed this movie, based on a book by the same name by Davis Seals, a Native activist. The story is based in the mid to late 1970’s and begins on the Northern Cheyenne Tribe’s reservation in Lame Deer, Montana. The two lead characters, Buddy Red Bow (A. Martinez) and his acquaintance (who later in the film becomes his friend), Philbert “Phil” Bono (Gary Farmer) travel to Santa Fe to rescue Buddy’s sister, Bonnie Red Bow who has been wrongfully jailed. Buddy finds out that his estranged sister has two small girls and he is determined to bring her back home to the reservation and get her out of jail. Philbert is a free spirit who sees visions and is very gentle natured. He is more in tune with the ancient traditions of their Tribe, stopping frequently to pray and meditate.…

The first hero is the “outlaw hero.” The name gives away much of what this hero is about. The outlaw is sort of the “bad-boy” of the film. They are portrayed as adventurers, cowboys, the vigilante types. Featured mainly in action based films, some examples of the outlaw hero include Huck Finn and Davy Crockett.…

The film consists of many cliché western characters. There is a banker, an outlaw, a prostitute, a doctor, a gambler, and a pregnant woman. These characters are categorized by social class. The banker, the pregnant woman, and the gambler are considered upper class. The outlaw, the prostitute, and the doctor are considered lower class. Ford emphasizes the social prejudice that is present between the two classes by using composition of mise-en-scène. In the dinner table scene, Lucy Mallory cannot bear eating next to, Dallas, the prostitute. Therefore, Hatfield escorts Lucy Mallory to the opposite end of the table. The use of space in the scene depicts the division between the upper class and the lower class. Because of the social status of Ringo Kid and Dallas, the characters in the upper class try not to associate themselves with them.…

Camera shots of scenery and nature along with digetic sound representing a harsh, sterile and miserable environment change the scene and introduce us to Vaughn. An extreme close up shot of bars over Vaughn’s face clearly gives a visual representation of entrapment. His two years of imprisonment without one visit from family has turned Vaughn into a caged animal. When he hears of his mothers illness he replies “serves the bitch right” and when asked why he doesn’t talk about his family by a fellow inmate “I don’t have one.” This in turn is ironic as his internal catalyst is that his mother is dying, and he breaks out of the prison to see her one last time. The photograph of Vaughn’s’ family is a linking motif with Lena’s, to their past and to their hopes for the future.…

    Tombstone

The movie is set in the year 1879 in the old west town of Tombstone Arizona and focuses mainly on the historical character Wyatt Earp, his family, friends, and the events leading in the town. The main character Wyatt Earp is exactly what you would expect of an old west lawman, tough but with a sense of dry humor that plays well with the rest of the characters, like his older brother Virgil and younger brother Morgan. Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan also brought their “wives” on the journey with them, Allie, Virgil’s wife, Louisa, Morgan’s wife, and Mattie, Wyatt’s wife who suffered with a significant drinking and drug problem. Along with the usual “bad guys” there are many other colorful characters that liven up the screen such as, the leader of the cowboy gang, Curly Bill Brocis and his right hand man in the gang, Johnny Ringo. The cowboy gang is made up of over 100 Texas outlaws and conartists that represent the earliest example of organized crime in North America. Although these are the villains in the movie, both Curly Bill and Johnny Ring bring a sense of drama and suspense to the screen that makes them two characters that you “love to hate”. And of course there are some of the lighter characters in the movie which include Wyatt’s best friend, Doc Holiday, the former dentist suffering from tuberculosis who now makes his living in the saloons playing poker and slinging guns, but he also brings a good dose of comic relief with his dry humor and deep southern Georgia accent while aside his traveling companion, his Hungarian mistress that goes by the name of Big Nose Kate. Finally, we get to the lovely Josephine Marcus, the exquisite actress that catches Wyatt’s eye while in Tombstone, which eventually sets a spark to ignite the romance that you wouldn’t expect from such a historical movie. In the events of this movie you have suspense, drama, and even…

Last March 3, 2011, at almost 8 AM in my wristwatch, we departed from TIP QC campus to start our most awaited trip at the following itineraries: MMDA traffic monitoring Makati City, Bayantel Telecommunications and Falcon Crest Campsite at Norzagaray, Bulacan. At our first destination MMDA, we’ve got to see the traffic monitoring operation of MMDA, where many of Metro Manila’s road by installing CCTV cameras at Metro Manilas road. We also got to see the operating room for the Traffic light controllers. We also went to Bayan Telecommunications Inc. at Roosevelt Ave., Quezon City. Bayantel is one of the leading telecommunications companies for voice, Internet and data in the Philippines. The one that orient us was a graduate of MAPUA, he’s been working at Bayantel for 3 years. He told us about the NOC (Network Operation Center) of Bayantel. They are the ones that fixing the problems of Bayantel users. And after Bayantel, the next and last destination was at Falcon Crest Campsite at Norzagaray, Bulacan. It took us an hour to reach our destination, and at the time our tour guide, Mr. Mar, tells us many trivia behind the places that we’re passing through. He also tells us stories and jokes for us to avoid boredom. Until we reached Falcon Crest Campsite, we went out from the bus to eat our lunch. And immediately after lunch, one of the staff of Falcon Crest orient us on how to use the gadgets for wall climbing, rappelling and even in zip line. They were very strict about safety and they did explain to us the importance of using proper attire and gadgets when climbing the wall and rappelling. And after the orientation, we were divided in many groups. We did the wall climbing, rappelling, zip line and cargonet. After trying those slight risky activities (for me), we started our team building, still in groups. Until the time we’d done the games, I really had fun. I really enjoyed the tour because I never thought that I will ever do that. I’m afraid in…
