“Women’s Education” In the article “Male Pride and Female Prejudice” John Tierney covers a lot of points about how women getting college degrees has somewhat changed social norms. One point that stood out the most is how divorce rates have went up a substantial amount. In today’s society, divorce rates have seemed to increase due to the incline of women’s college graduate percentile. In the old days it was expected that women stay home and keep the house clean while their husbands brought the bread home. Today many women do not wish to do that at all, even when some men still expect it. Most women who were verbally, mentally, and physically abused by their husbands were basically stuck staying with them. Now women have the intelligence and the ability to get out of those not so ideal situations. In other words women do not put up with as much nonsense as they use to. Also women are finding themselves getting divorces because they can financially support themselves without a husband. In the past women were dependent on their husband’s income. Having a college degree opens up many opportunities for women, and they can be financially stable on their own. Women have a bigger trait of independence than men, so when the opportunity comes to become an independent individual, most of the time they take it. Most importantly, because of education women now know their rights. A lot of the time women want to get out of a marriage but simply are not educated on their rights. Without knowledge of their rights women have not been able to do anything about being in a bad marriage. Men can sometimes manipulate women into thinking that there is no way out and without knowing any better women believe it. It is very clear that divorce rates are increasing because women are getting better educated. This could be a positive impact on society eventually, but only time will tell. Thanks to education women know their rights, are becoming financially independent, and not putting up with domestic violence.

Another large part of the increase in divorce rate is the change of women’s position. Since there have been improvements in women’s economic positions it has allowed them to become less financially dependant on their husbands and therefore easier to end an unsatisfactory marriage. We know that in the past, divorce was very hard to get as it was only legal for the men to file a divorce. Also it was socially unacceptable, however during the years government has been passing laws in order to make divorce easier and cheaper. We know that in 1969, the Divorce Reform Act was introduced which made it much easier to get a divorce. Also due to the law that was passed out in 1984 which allowed couples to only stay in a marriage for one year before filing a divorce as we know that before the couples had to wait at least three years. Women are more likely than men to want a divorce, and more women are divorced than men. That is because men are more likely to remarry than women and do so at a faster rate.
