Why is it important to respect your Chain of Command? This is a common question asked by a lot of new soldiers and experienced ones but the answer is simple and for many reasons. There is an old saying among army leaders, “Take care of your people, and they’ll take care of you.” The reasons are to start, because of the Army Values, the NCO creed, and basic morals. The Army Values: loyalty, duty, RESPECT, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. These are things every Soldier, NCO, and Officer agrees to live by as guidance for how they carry themselves in day to day life. The respect value is defined as; “Treat people as they should be treated. In the Soldier’s Code, we pledge to “treat others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same.” Respect is what allows us to appreciate the best in other people. Respect is trusting that all people have done their jobs and fulfilled their duty. And self-respect is a vital ingredient with the Army value of respect, which results from knowing you have put forth your best effort. The Army is one team and each of us has something to contribute.” The Chain of Command was established as a way to not have all duties fall over one person, each person in the Chain of Command has an essential function. Without filling in your appropriate person, the chain fails. Sometimes this is as little as not mentioning an appointment or could be as large as fatalities in a combat scenario. The chain cannot function properly if not used appropriately, if the Chain of Command is abused, there is a lack of integrity or loyalty, or lack of respect. Respect of the Chain of Command is essential due to each person’s functions within it. With failure to respect even the lowest members on the Chain of Command a break occurs in the functionality.     The rank structure goes back to the 1700’s. The rank structure was put into place so that the soldiers had someone that was there to give out orders; also the rank structure was there to teach the newer enlisted respect. If the rank structure was not in place, there would be no order or discipline in the army. The United States ARMY is the World’s strongest army. And it is all because we have order and discipline threw out all of the ranks. When we know that the person out ranks us we need to show the proper respect that they have earned through being in the military and doing their job. As a soldier that has had a lot of mistakes with respecting the rank structure, I know how hard it may be. But all in all you want to respect the persons rank. It does not do anything to the person that you are disrespecting. The one thing that it does do is make them mad. And in all honesty they have a reason to get mad. They have earned their way. They were a private once. It is not like they joined the army as a sergeant. They had to fight their way through the ranks just as most of us have and probably will continue to do. I have always lived by the saying; respect is earned, not given. Well I realized something. The noncommissioned officer has earned the respect that must be shown. If you do not see that they deserve respect. Guess what, the army feels and knows that they do deserve the respect of all their subordinates. So let us all do our selves a favor.     A Code of Conduct as described by Collins (2012) defines ones behaviors in relation to given situations. For the military, the Code of Conduct was established as a result of the gruesome conditions that prisoners of war were faced with during the Korean War. The standards outlined in the Code of Conduct were the standards developed to guide Soldiers while in combat or captivity and were issued in an executive order on August 17th 1955. These same standards of conduct have been revised only twice. The first revision was to clarify the meaning of certain words and the second was to change the Code of Conduct to reflect a gender-neutral standard. A Code of Ethics is guiding principles that are established to remind us that in various situations, this is who we should strive to be (Collins, 2012). No different than any other profession, the Army has established values that are to serve as guiding principles for the Soldiers that have sworn to defend the US Constitution. These seven values are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless-service, honor, integrity, and personal courage and serve to guide Soldiers actions in everyday decisions/problem solving situations. The Army has placed a renewed emphasis on ethical decision making and with the establishment of the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE) in 2010 has shown a commitment to change the cultural mindset of an Army that has been at war for over 14 years.     The purpose of the Chain of Command is to install structure, discipline and respect into newer enlisted soldiers. Each branch has its own secretary that assigns forces under their jurisdictions to unify and specific combatant commanders they perform missions and report back to their chain of command. The chain of command starts with the Commander-in-Chief and works its way down to the lowest ranking private in the Army. Within the military, the chain of command is a method for leading and communicating. In addition to being a chain of command within the officer ranks, one of the main purposes of the chain of command is to be the back bone of the NCO support channel. The discipline and order that the army maintains is what makes our Army the strongest in the world. From the moment you raise your hand and join the military you do as you are instructed at any time to complete any mission during the time allotted, once completed whoever at the time has to report back to the Chain of Command.     There are many reasons why a soldier, (doesn't matter the rank) should obey orders from anyone above him or her in the chain of command. Sometimes its good to listen to people soldiers below you too because they maybe smarter at the task then you are. One reason is that the military is revolved around higher ranking soldiers leading the lower ranking soldiers, they’re more experienced in the military then I am and been deployed more than i have.
