Although some critics might state that the design is the least impotant aspect of the theatrical performance, the design, which includes lighting, sound, and costume, is a key element in the success of the production. As a former light technitian of my high school drama department, I learn that lights is a key aspect of the production because it enhances the mood making a intense scene extra fierce with red lights or making it calm with blue lights. The lights are key in order to be able to hide certain entrances and exits. Sounds is needed to make the characters audible and cue sounds unable to be produced by actors. Costumes are needed to establish the time period of the piece as well as the initial impression of each characters. But I did not get this appreaction of design until I became a stage tech.…
Costuming is also something that changes widely throughout different performances of Shakespeare. The costumes can be modernized, or the actors can wear the traditional pumpkin pants. One example is the lion in the mechanicals’ play. The lion should look nothing like a lion. This makes it funnier when they make the announcement that it is not a real lion. One option is that the lion look almost like how a small child would dress if he wanted to look like a lion. It could have a mop on its head with whiskers drawn on its face and a yellow sweat suit. The fairies could also have some interesting options for costuming. They could be traditional fairies with wings and crowns, but another way to costume them would be to have them dressed in trench coats and hats to make it seem like they are trying to hide among the humans.…
Joe, a seven year old boy, was very excited to go see his first clown with his family. He experienced his first clown when he went to the circus. He went to the Ringling Bros Circus and met a Whiteface clown. Joe later found out that the Whiteface clown was not the only type. In addition to the Whiteface clown, Joe soon discovered that there are more kinds of clowns: the “Auguste” clown as well as “character” clowns, which are all very different in appearance and character (All About Clowns, “Types”).…
Greek theater took great advantage of the natural surroundings, a great theater design, and technologically advanced props and equipment. The Theater itself consisted of 4 parts, the Orchestra, the Skene, the theatron, and the paradoi. Technologically advanced equipment such as the machina, or the ekeclema gave the greek theater an air of believability. Oedipus took advantage of many of these aspects of the theater, and used them to a great advantage.…
Firstly, the look of the stage for Bombshells definitely caught my eye at first. I was rather confused when I first saw it, wondering how this could work. Without any lights on, it looked like a panel of foggy glass windows. When the show began, they did make some interesting use of this type of backdrop. Rather than having to change the stage a lot for each scene which took place in a wide variety of locations, they used colors or just darkness to help set the tone for the scene. My favorite use of this stage setup though was the transition from one scene to another. Since Caroline O’Conner was portraying six different characters in this production, in between each scene required some rather quick costume changes. Rather than just have the audience sit there staring at nothing, we could watch the changing of the…

The genre of clowning actually originates from Greece, where satires had begun originating slowly as time went by. The art of satire was challenged throughout the years to form the various forms of clowning we have today. A clown must have certain abilities or skills to master its comedy upon the audience. It is a profession that requires delicate detail, precise movements, and of course a reaction.…
"Staging" in Drama means the process or manner of putting a play on stage. This refers to the positioning of the characters and props, the way the actors move, the way they use their voice and how the character looks. Gore Vidal once said, "A talent for Drama is not a talent for writing, but an ability to articulate human relationships." By this, Vidal meant that to convey a play properly, association between the characters has to be real, dynamic action that captures the attention of an audience.…
Over time these contributions have been taken and adapted to create the theatre that many people know and love today. However, unlike in Ancient Greece; there are more than two styles of theatre today and not just by the means of the theatre types, for example; a proscenium theatre or theatre in the round, but the acting styles as well, such as Naturalistic, Non-Naturalistic, Epic theatre, Absurdism etc. These are seen as a collaboration of the developments of the theatre through out the different time periods and the practitioners of different…
Each character would have a specific outfit to help the audience identify who they were. Costumes consisted of loose fitting closes, tight fitting clothes and many colors to create an elaborate look. In commedia dell’Arte, the colors of the costumes would also represent mood and social class. Each character had a, individual mask that would also make it easy to figure out who each character was. The masks would also, “limit the view of the actors, making them snake their head from side to side to see what was going on. The characters all had characteristics that governed the way they moved and this would directly affect the way they did things on the stage.”(…

A stage manager is essentially the head traffic controller of a live theater or television production. Once the director has issued his or her final notes to the cast, the stage manager usually assumes command of the physical stage area. All of the various technical crews, such as lighting, sound, props and scenery, report directly to the stage manager, who in turn remains in constant communication with the director by in-house phone or wireless headset. The head stage manager has a number of duties to perform, some of which may be delegated to other stage managers or assistants.…
