Emphysema describes a loss of elasticity within the lungs, enlargement of the alveoli and the destruction of the alveolar walls. There are two types of emphysema: centriacinar and panacinar. Centriacinar emphysema, most common form of emphysema, affects the center of the respiratory lobule, such as the bronchioles, which is where a majority of the alveolar ducts and sacs are located. This form of emphysema is predominately seen in smokers, especially male smokers. Panacinar emphysema is most commonly seen in individuals with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
