A covenant is a promise or an agreement with binding obligations. (Arnold) In relations to the Bible it signifies God’s pledge to bless mankind. The characteristics of a covenant are such that they are irreversible and permanently binding. The Bible contains many covenants, most of which are contained in the Old Testament. One of which is prophesized in the Old Testament, and for Christians the promise is fulfilled in the New Testament. The major covenants in the Bible are the Noahic, the Abrahamic, Mosaic, Deuteronomic, Davidic, and the New Covenant. Many biblical scholars believe God making the first covenant in Genesis 2:17. However the first mention of the word “covenant” in found in Genesis 9:9. This covenant is between God and Noah in regards to the flood. God’s promise was to never to destroy all the people and annals of the word again with a flood. (Genesis 9:11) God gave Noah a beautiful sign of his covenant with Noah and every living creature, that sign was a rainbow in the clouds (Genesis 9:13) God told Noah that whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures. (Genesis 9:14-16) In this particular covenant was autonomous meaning the people had no obligation in the covenant. The blessing was the promise of God to keep his word. This everlasting covenant was worldwide without condition by all the people and creatures of the Earth. Secondly God’s covenant with Abraham, and all his descendants established Israel as God’ chosen people. (Covenant) This covenant also promised to Abraham and his descendants all the land from the river of Egypt to the great river the Euphrates- the land of Kenites,

Kenizzites, Kadmonties, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites. (Genesis 15:18-21) The sign of the Abrahamic covenant God gave to Abraham and his descendants was

    Hebrew religion consisted of a single omnipotent god, Yahweh, while the Mesopotamians and Egyptians had multiple gods who each controlled their own section in nature. This means that the Hebrews only had to follow orders from one god, whereas Mesopotamians and Egyptians had to work hard to keep all of the gods happy. If what one god’s orders conflicted with another god’s orders, the people were forced to take sides, and unity would break. This could cause disputes amongst the two sides, and war could potentially break out. Alongside monotheism, the covenant also plays a major role in the structure of Hebrew religion. It is a pact that Abraham made with Yahweh, which both Yahweh and the Hebrew people had to follow.
