Compare and Contrast of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe Paintings

Leonardo DaVinci’s Mona Lisa is one of the most well-known paintings in the world. Show anyone from a 60 year old man to a 10 year old girl a picture of the painting and, most likely, they will be able to name the painting as well as the painter. While some say that DaVinci’s painting is the most famous of all created, many of Andy Warhol’s paintings are also easily recognizable. Almost everyone has seen the Campbell’s Soup Can series Warhol painted or his famous Triple Elvis print. This paper will be focusing on his Marilyn Monroe series, which I will be comparing and contrasting to the Mona Lisa. There are many obvious differences between the two paintings, such as the time period, color scheme, background and subject matter. My goal is to also point out some similarities such as their use of line, recreations, fame, and prominence in society. One of the major contrasts between the two works is the history behind the paintings. Andy Warhol was said to be fascinated with the actress Marilyn Monroe’s supposed suicide in August of 1962. Warhol proved the Proverb, “Good men must die, but death cannot kill their names” to be true, making his Marilyn Monroe series one of his most famous works. Warhol bought a publicity still of Marilyn’s 1953 movie Niagara, cropped it, enlarged the face, and reproduced it on eight different canvases. Each painting was given a different color scheme. These paintings were the first solo exhibition for Warhol. The most famous of the series, Lemon Marilyn, was bought and kept in a private collection until 2007. While the subject of Warhol’s painting is very well known and easily recognized, the subject of Leonardo DaVinci’s Mona Lisa was most likely commoner, and there are many different theories of who the woman could be. Some say the woman is DaVinci himself, in woman form. Others say it could be Lisa Gherardini; the wife of a wealthy businessman

In this essay I am going to be exploring two artefacts and discussing the relationships between them, considering the meanings behind them, the time and context. The first artefact I have chosen to explore is ‘Turquoise Marilyn’, which is Acrylic and Silkscreen on Linen created by Andy Warhol, 1964. The second artefact is ‘For the Love of God’, which is platinum cast of a human skull, studded with over 8500 diamonds, created by Damien Hirst, 2007. While I think these two artifacts offer multiple topics of interesting similarities I want to focus on the impact that society, technological developments, economic factors and formal innovations had on the artists. The main question I want to draw on in the essay on is how both of the artefacts raised questions at the times they were made because they both were so new and challenged previous styles and why the artists did this.…

The information was retrieved online and in the book. With Leonardo’s Mona Lisa the picture is not quite common for the Renaissance era. The face is turned nearly frontal; the shoulders are turned ¾ towards the viewer and the hands are included in the image. (Khan, 2006) The Mona Lisa is a 2-Dimentional work of High Renaissance Art and the materials used to create it were oil paints, a cottonwood panel, and Leonardo’s mighty hand and paint brush. The style that was used was a Sfumato and atmospheric perspective. Sfumato- a Smokey haziness to soften outlines and create an atmospheric effect around the figure. Leonardo was one of the first ones to use this technique in Florence, Italy. The painting was painted using a technique called Chiaroscuro. The colors used to produce the Mona Lisa were: earth tones, flesh tones and blues and greens. The line of the Mona Lisa is an actual line and a jagged, irregular line. The shape of the Mona Lisa is triangular, which Leonardo used. The texture of the Mona Lisa would have been smooth. The value of the Mona Lisa would have been suggestive of planes and textures. The balance of the Mona Lisa would have been unity and variety. The Mona Lisa has subject matter and that would be a Florentine woman of beauty. The Mona Lisa is likely a portrait of the wife of a Florentine merchant and her gaze would have been meant for her husband. The Mona Lisa was never delivered and Leonardo kept it when he went to work for Francis I. I think that Leonardo’s message would have been that he was painting the world something of beauty and leaving us in awe. The Mona Lisa is the most recognized painting in the entire world and has become an icon of the Renaissance. The Mona Lisa would have been a representational work of art. Leonardo Da Vinci wasn’t just a painter he was a sculptor, inventor, etc., and was the best…

The Mona Lisa was painted 500 years ago, and still remains a topic of discussion. Particularly about the subject, Lisa Gheradini. Da Vinci did not leave any information about the portrait, so much has been left to speculation. Her half smile, something rare in portraiture of the time. Some say this is because da Vinci had her entertained by clowns and musicians while he was painting, and she was smiling out of amusement. The Mona Lisa is an open work. Leaving the viewer to determine its meaning.…

Leonardo Da Vinci was a painter, an architect and a man of many things. He was considered a genius with a lot of the things he put his mind to. As of today he is best known for his art, including two paintings Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Leonardo’s paintings were based on science and nature. It was said he spent many hours filling books full of his inventions and observations. Some people did not agree with his ideas and thought of them as outrageous, until later on where they realized his intelligence through his drawings of bicycles, air planes and much more. Leonardo Da Vinci was born April 15, 1452 and he died on May 2nd, 1519. The most famous painting in the world is named Mona Lisa, it was said that it is a showing of his inner self and how he imagines real beauty. He is known for his intelligence in art and science and the shapes and curves are told tell signs that, the painting is his expression of beauty. Many of the Mona Lisa researchers believe that “Mona Lisa “is actually representing a person. Ever sense the first time I heard of the painting I have been told that Mona Lisa was actually Leonardo dressed up. There has been many speculations as to who “Mona Lisa”. Is Mona Lisa a picture of someone else, is it Leonardo is it the Italian friend of Leonardo’s that many researchers stand firm behind? That to me is not certain. To me the painting represents a fairly skinny woman. She has her hands crossed as she is posing for an important picture. She seems to be in some sort of atmosphere with rocks, tress or even mountains behind her. It appears she is sitting down as her hands are lying on her knees. Behind Mona Lisa is what it looks like rivers, full of water or some sort of mountain ranges. The water seems to be flowing downstream as the mountains elevation rises behind her head. Mona Lisa is wearing some sort of head piece to potentially hold her hair back from her face. Her dress is a bit low in the front showing cleavage. Her dress…

The whistle blows, signaling the end of the timeout. There’s three seconds left in the NBA Finals Championship Game. The Bulls find themselves down by one after giving up a layup to the Cavaliers. At this point you know the ball is going into one mans hands; the man trusted to make so many clutch shots in his career, the man who lives for these situations, Michael Jordan. The ball is handed to the player out- a- bounds so he can inbound it; Michael shakes free and gets the ball. He takes a dribble toward the free throw line…2 seconds left. He elevates into his shot…1 second left. The ball leaves his fingertips with perfect rotation. The ball is in the air as if moving in slow motion across the sky. Closer and closer it gets to the rim; there’s no way its going in then, swish, perfect shot tickling the twine as the buzzer sounds. “The bulls win, the bulls win,” was the scream coming from the announcers on TV. Michael leaps in the air in celebratory fashion knowing that he had just won the NBA championship for his team in near impossible fashion.…

Leonardo De Vinci used oils to paint the Mona Lisa creating a life like painting. The size of this painting was not a big as I expected to be but the painting itself is amazing. I did not feel there were any distinct lines, but there were plenty of shading that allowed every part to flow right into the next. Like, how the clothing flows softly into a hand, or how her forehead perfectly blends into her hair. I think of this painting like it was photograph, it is brilliant how her chin stops and her neck begins with subtle lines, nothing over exaggerated. De Vinci used colors that seemed to draw attention to her face as the focal point. There is a perfect contrast of colors between her pale, soft looking skin against her dark dress catches the eye. This contrast is so apparent that you can even see the color of her hands are just a little darker than the color of her face, which assists in drawing the viewer’s attention to her face. Her facial expression is the what makes her face the obvious focal point of this painting. It pulls out a lot of questions from the mind. Is she smiling? If so, what or who was she was smiling at? Is it a smile to go along with a playful glance as if she was expressing all of her thoughts to the one she was looking at? Or is she even looking at anyone or…

As any mere mortal gazes upon one of Leonardo Da Vinci’s pieces, a sense of divinity and wonder befalls him—visualizing those brush strokes exuding from his paintbrush as he gives life to a blank canvas is mesmerizing. Throughout history, this Renaissance man has intrigued many, and his legacy has been immortalized by his works and by his many biographers. The earliest Leonardo Da Vinci biographer was Giorgio Vasari, a fifteenth-century Italian artist, famous for his biographies of Renaissance artists. Vasari’s approach to Leonardo has a poetic quality, embellished with poignant stories of his divine talent. Contrastingly, cotemporary art historian Martin Kemp, a world authority on Leonardo, chooses a somewhat different approach in his Leonardo biography; he employs a more holistic approach focusing more on Da Vinci’s beliefs and scholarly interests behind his work. These two perspectives on Leonardo’s life contribute greatly in the analysis of his work, each granting a different building block to understand the great master. I will analyze one of Leonardo’s great works, The Madonna of the Yarnwinder (1501-1507), keeping in mind both Vasari and Kemp’s approach in their biographies of the artist.…

The portrait of Mona Lisa is also known as La Giocondo, she was the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. This painting was done in oil paints on poplar wood by Leonardo da Vinci from the year 1503 to 1506. The dimensions of this painting are 76.2 x 53.3 cm. The painting is now in the Musee du Louvre in Paris. The Mona Lisa is a painting of a woman, dressed in a dark green dress with her hands overlapping. The background of the painting is a mountainous landscape. The whole painting is a remarkable example of Leonardo’s sfumato technique of painting. Sfumato is the blurred outline and mellowed colors that allow one form to merge with another and always leave something to our imagination. This is a technique that only Leonardo perfected. Other famous painters such as Van Eyck, Mantegna, and Botticelli tried, but were unsuccessful in duplicating Leonardo’s technique.…
