This is to EMPOWER everyone, especially WOMEN, so that there will always be an INFORMED CHOICE.

Abortifacient- pinaninipis o tinutuyo nito ang dugo sa matris ("thins the lining of the uterus").

Daphne...lynestrenol; Belongs to the class of estren derivative progestogens used in progestogenic hormone preparations.

Mechanism of Action: Daphne is a progestogen-only oral contraceptive pill. Progestogens are derived from the natural hormone progesterone or 19-nortestosterone, which actions are similar to those of progesterone.
Daphne stops ovulation, thins the lining of the uterus and thickens the cervical mucus.

Pregnancy Category (US FDA): Category D: There is positive evidence of human foetal risk

Side Effects: Some women may experience side effects eg, nausea, vomiting, headache, breast discomfort, depression, skin rashes and slight weight change. Menstrual irregularities eg, amenorrhea, breakthrough bleeding, spotting and menorrhagia are common with progestogen-only

First there is the issue of birth control and the many different types they could use. Some of the women that Nancy Shcheper-Hughes interviewed said that they have used the pill for a brief time. Although it was effective they considered it dangerous. They said that it would cause cancer, swelling, headaches, nausea, and extreme nervousness. (pg. 333) Then there are diaphragms which are not available in local drugstores or not known to the women and with the men they are known to wear condoms but only with the prostitutes in the zona. (pg. 333) The older women of Alto have many different herbal teas, baths, washes, and infusions that would effect a women’s period so that it would be late and were stated to having “abortive” properties. (pg. 333-334) The women know that these herbs can be dangerous in early stages of pregnancy but they are constantly sick and taking so many different drugs and herbs that if an abortion were to happen then it was an “unintended consequence”. My mother died at the age of 50 due to the strain of 18 pregnancies, consisting of 11 births and 7 miscarriages. I was the sixth out of those 11 children. In 1900, I began training as a nurse; I wanted to aid pregnant women. Since then, I’ve seen many poor young mothers become extremely ill and die of the strain from frequent pregnancies. During a house visit, I met a 28 year old mother of 3 with another child on the way, who died of self induced abortion. I remember seeing her body, I remember earlier visits, and I remember how desperate she was to get out of her situation. After witnessing these terrible tragedies I quit nursing in 1902 and devoted my life to helping women before they were driven to dangerous and extreme measures. I then got the idea of a “magic pill” that women could take to help prevent pregnancy.…

Sterilization is the surgical process after which a person can no longer reproduce. The process in permanent and irreversible. It is a choice for people but laws are considering to enforce it on the unfortunate group of drug-addicted mothers. The drug-addicted mothers are wholly held responsible for the Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), a group of problems that a new born has to face because the mother was dependant on illegal or prescribed drugs. The baby becomes addicted with the mother, and is still dependent on drug at the time of birth. With an increase in the number of babies born addicted to drugs, the lawmakers considered forced sterilization upon drug-addicted mothers as the most effective solution to eradicate this issue forever. However, such a prospect is appalling as it violates human rights, contradicts established laws, legalizes the practice of eugenics, and is a very risky process.…

The Ancient Egyptians are the first known to use a contraceptive known as a pessary. The pessary is a concoction made of crocodile dung, sodium carbonate, and honey all missed together, fermented, and inserted into the vagina as a spermicide and blockade to sperm. Other methods included the insertion of the other foods such as sour milk, acacia gum, dates, and the complete removal of the ovaries all together. The Ancient Greeks took a similar approach to birth control but instead of food they used oils such as olive oil, lead ointment, frankincense oil, cedar oil, and an ancient plant called silphium (a large cousin to the fennel plant which, because of such high demand, was extinct by the fourth century A.D.). While barriers such as condoms were documented as far back as about 3000 B.C. but were used as a protection against disease rather than the prevention of pregnancy. In the fourth century B.C., Aristotle actually wrote about early condoms and another method of postcoital contraception where the woman squatted and exerted pressure on her lower abdomen in order to push the semen out of her vagina.…

The two methods of termination is either surgical or medical TOP. A medical TOP involves oral mifepristone, a progestin antagonist which sensitises the myometrium to prostaglandin induced contractions and ripens the cervix, followed by misoprostol, a synthetic prostaglandin analogue, orally and or vaginally, which causes uterine contractions and cervical dilatation. The addition of the progesterone antagonist reduces the induction to abortion interval, analgesia required and prostaglandin dose(Farquhar et al. 2009 pg.1). A surgical termination consists of prior dilapan rod insertion and misoprostol priming to dilate and soften the cervix, followed by D&E under local or general anesthetic. Dilapan rods are hydrophilic polymer rods which work by absorbing fluid and slowly expanding, therefore causing cervical dilatation(Farquhar et al. 2009 pg1).The protocol used for medical TOP was as follows: 600 mg mifepristone orally, admission to gynecology ward 36-48 hours later, 800 micrograms misoprostol vaginally then 400 micrograms misoprostol orally at three hourly intervals, with a maximum of four oral doses. If significant bleeding occurred prior to planned admission, admission occurred at that time and the misoprostol regimen commenced. Manual removal of the placenta was recommended after delivery if the placenta did not deliver spontaneously. Pain relief was offered at regular intervals during the procedure according to a protocol that included morphine or pethidine given intravenously, in women…

    Abortion in Ancient Times

Procedure of abortion is known since ancient times. The word abortion is came the Latin abortus where “ab” means “amiss” and “oriri” means “likely to be born, arise”. Along with infanticide it has existed in many societies, both primitive and advanced. The earliest records of an abortive technique go back about 4,600 years to an ancient Chinese work, purportedly the work of Emperor Shen Nung which prescribes the use of mercury to induce an abortion. In ancient ages pessaries or vaginal suppositories were used as an abortifacients. They are generally more effective than oral drugs and included substances such as juice of the wild fig, a “dairy liquid” ,which caused irritation, soapwort, myrrh, myrtle, lupine, cedar-oil mixed with water, wine, or hot oil. Ancient doctors also suggested smearing on the uterine opening goose fat, mashed leek and celery, rose oils, pine resin, copper scum, boiled honey, sodium carbonate, and even mouse dung. The Egyptian Kahun Papyrus, which dates to 1850 B.C., recommend crocodile feces either for preventing conception or as an abortifacient. The Ebers Papyrus, which dates to 1550 B.C., contains several recipes that “cause a woman to stop pregnancy in the first, second, or third period.” One recipe for a vaginal suppository includes mixed the unripe fruit of Acacia, colocynth, dates, and 6/7 pints of honey and pouring the mixture onto a moistened plant fiber. Modern Arabic women still take colocynth as an abortifacient, though one woman who took 120 grains in a powder died 50 hours later. In Arabic medicine, elephant feces were frequently recommended. Aristotle suggests that the conceptus had a “soul” after 40 days from conception if a male and 90 if female. In addition there are similar differentiations in the Bible. Later, Aristotle says that the fetus develops gradually and that it is impossible to make a fine judgment. Famous doctors such as Pliny the Elder, Dioscorides, and Pseudo-Galen mention more “superstitious”…
