The article was published in the September 2009 edition of the American Journal of Critical Care and was written by Brackbill, Sytsma and Sykes. A review of pertinent background for the authors demonstrates that Brackbill and Sykes both posses Doctoral Degrees in pharmacology and are employed in this field. Further, Sytsma holds a Master of Science in Nursing and is currently the director of Winchester Medical Center’s Heart and Vascular Center in Winchester, Virginia.
Problem Statement/Purpose In reviewing the problem statement/purpose of the study, the researchers provide an extensive background on the impact of metabolic syndrome on outcomes for patients that have undergone coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The authors note that extensive research in this area has demonstrated notable health issues and health complications for patients with metabolic syndrome who receive this treatment. The objective of this study which was conducted by two professors at Witchita State University, Cathleen A. Lewandowski and Twyla J. Hill was to evaluate whether social and emotional supports influenced the successful completion of drug treatment amongst women. The study was conducted in a non-profit agency which provided comprehensive drug abuse treatment in programs that were specifically designed for women. Although the facility in which the study took place was comprised of various levels of care such as: residential treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, and outpatient treatment, this study focused on women’s completion of the 30-day residential program in particular. I believe this article targeted professionals that work with this population. The article was easy to understand and it used factual information to help substantiate their views.…

The study clearly identifies the aim of the study as “to examine the way in which nurses manage patients who refuse nursing care procedures.”(Aveyard, 2004, p. 346) The study identifies two main purposes for the research study as: 1- To examine how consent is obtained prior to nursing care procedures, 2- To explore the ways in which consent could be approached by clinical nurses.”(Aveyard, 2004, p. 347) The author provided clear purpose or aim of the research problem, “the way in which nurses manage patients who refuse nursing care procedures.”(Aveyard, 2004, p. 346) And related the problem to the questions of how consent is obtained, how obtaining consent can be approached, and at the extent to which consent remains voluntary. The qualitative method is appropriate for this study as the information needed was obtained…

The major variable is the participants must have a scalp laceration and gone to the emergency department within a nine month period of time of the study. Two envelopes containing information sheet, two consent forms, a head injury information sheet and tracing sheet and either absorbable sutures and non-absorbable sutures were randomly selected when patients arrived with a scalp laceration. The author did not discuss as to why they chose this method. I would venture to say they did not want the staff in the…

“Want-Creation Fuels Americans’ Addictiveness” is a confusing title as much as the essay belonging to it. In the essay, which initially appeared in the St. Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch, Author Philip Slater poorly emphasizes that American society has contributed and amplified Americans’ addiction behavior. The article is initially engaging to a reader, however, the transitions between topics can lose the reader’s interest because of the ambiguity. Slater also brings good points for the reader to consider but he fails to correlate them together in a manner that could easily identifiable. Slater is also unclear as to the intention of his argument by his manner of bringing up irrelevant issues that are present in American society. Ultimately, the poor organization and Slater’s inability to show the relationship between the examples given make this essay difficult to read and difficult to comprehend the purpose for which it was written for.…

After analyzing Edwin W. Koc’s article, “The Myth of the Millennials,” he demonstrates disbelief that millennial students are more than “self-indulgent, entitled, and dependent as adults and employees.” His point specifies that millennial parents emphasize their children’s needs first by often working more than one job, these millennial parents ensured that their children could engage in their individual desires. However, instead of helping them, millennial students and workers grow up with a false notion of reality; they erroneously believe that life is all about them, which creates problems in the workplace. The only way to make a more educated hypothesis regarding whether or not the work-life balance or the helicopter parents are legends or real, is to conduct more extensive studies on a much broader platform. To better understand Millennials students and employees, one must understand what drives them to succeed perhaps it's easiest to understand who they are not.…

This paper will review and critique Hess's quantitative study of vascular access improvement in pediatric population by using a vein viewing device. The author utilized a prospective, non-randomized study at a tertiary care center. The sample of the study included 150 procedures in the control group and 91 procedures in the experimental group from the ages 0 to 17 years. The primary aim of the study was to increase the first-attempt success rate of venipuncture and decrease procedure time for the study population.…

The dependent variables in this study are the registered nurses licensed to practice in the state of Nevada; the independent variable was the Registered Nurses’ Workplace Support for Patient Advocacy Activities Study Questionnaire.(Black, 2011, p. 29) Data was collected through the developed questionnaire that was sent to 1725 registered nurses with active, current licensure and residing in the state of Nevada at the time of the survey.(Black, 2011, p. 29) The author provided no rationale for using the chosen data collection method, I would assume that this was the most cost effective and best way to maintain privacy for all respondents. The surveys were sent out using the United States Postal Service on September 8, 2008. (Black, 2011, p. 30) The respondents were asked to complete the…
