Report, the Tarsier
Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Primates

Family: Tarsiidae

Common Name: Philippine Tarsier

What is a tarsier? Tarsiers are the smallest species of monkeys, and wholly carnivores. They have enormous eyes, a long tail, pads at the ends of each of their fingers and toes and, have big round ears that help them hunt better. These pads let them climb very well. Their large eyes are excellent at seeing at night. These animals are nocturnal, which means that they hunt and stay awake at night and sleep in the day. Its scientific name is Tarsius. Order is Oligocene Epoch primate. Genus is Tarsius. Family is Tarsiidae. Species are the Philippines Tarsier, Western Tarsier, and the Spectral Tarsier. Its common name is obviously the Tarsier. You find a tarsier in the islands of the Philippines including Mindanao, Letye, Samar and Bohol. They also live in the lowlands of Sulawesi, Indonesia and in the island of Southeast Asia. Tarsiers range from about 6 inches in height not including the tail. They weigh between 3 & 4 oz (85 & 110 grams). Their length including the tail is about 16 inches. Tarsiers become sexually matured at the age of one. Their breeding period goes throughout the year. A female's gestation period is about six months. Each female tarsier can only bear one young at a time. Their life span goes about 8 years or more depending on where they are living. A tarsier's diet consists of eating insects, lizards, worms, and other very small animals. Tarsiers seem to be insectivorous and carnivorous. They drink several times each night. Prey is caught invariably by leaping at it, pinning it down by one or both hands, and killing or at least immobilizing it by several bites. The victim, often caught on the ground, is carried in the mouth to a perch, where it is eaten head first. For the head-hunting Iban people of Borneo, the tarsiers once played an important role as a totem animal. Since the head of this small, nocturnal

One of the most interesting primates living on this earth is the Siamang gibbon. I first found these primates interesting while I was at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago years ago because of their unique sound they make with their giant throats that sounds like a howl but has rhythm like a song. They have distinct features unlike other gibbons and they sure know how to make a scene or at least noticeable to visitors. Although my visit was very vague, these primates are still imprinted in my memory.…

The tarsier is the only completely carnivores primate, feasting on bugs and small lizards that inhabit the rainforest along with it. The tarsier tends to “[hunt] a meter or so above the ground” (Tarsier: The Littlest Alien). To adapt to being nocturnal and hunting at night the tarsier has developed an enhanced sense of hearing. The tarsier will cling to a branch using its unusually long tarsus bone, for which it is named after, along with its long and padded fingers. Then, it will wait and listen for the sound of a scurrying bug or lizard, leap towards it, and catch it with the same padded fingers it uses for climbing. The tarsier will use these same listening and leaping strategies to evade predators. Just like the tarsier has an unusual diet compared to other primates, it lives a very different social life than other primates.…

Prior to discussing the problems of the modern day Tarsiers, let’s look at where they came from. Tarsiers are primates (a group including lemurs, monkeys, apes and humans) found only in the islands of Southeast Asia. There is debate among scientists over how many types of Tarsier exist and whether there are more yet to be described. Most recently it was thought that there are 3 species groups (or genera): Western, Eastern and Philippine, with 18 species and subspecies in total belonging to these 3 groups. There are many differences between species, including eye size, ear size, behavior, vocalizations and distribution. Tarsiers are arboreal (tree living) and jump through the trees to catch their food, which is mainly insect based, although can include lizards, snakes and birds. Tarsiers are small with very large eyes, elongated hind legs and feet, a thin tail and long fingers. They are nocturnal (active at night) although some species may move around in the daytime. Some species live in family groups while others spend most of their time alone and mating behavior also varies between species. Tarsiers are born with fur and their eyes open and can climb trees within an hour of birth. Tarsiers are ‘haplorrhine’ primates - a group which also includes old world and new world monkeys and apes (including humans), but not lemurs, aye-aye or…

    Capuchin Monkeys

Capuchins have traditionally been in the genus, Cebus Erxleben from the family Cabidae. There had been four species recognized among the capuchins, such as: Cebus albifrons, Cebus olivaceus, Cebus capucinus, and Cebus apella, all of which are a taxonomy that dominated capuchin history for an approximation of 50 years (Lynch Alfaro et al., 2014). Over the years more capuchins had been recognized as well such as, Cebus kaapori, Cebus libidinosus, Cebus nigritus, Cebus queirozi, and finally Cebus xanthosternos. In a physical sense, capuchin monkeys weigh around six to twelve pounds and live over five decades. In contrast to New World Monkeys, they have robust jaw and dental structures, large brains…

They have a thick, wavy coat and, in some climates, will shed all year long. There is feathering on the legs which is more pronounced on the males. A natural docked tail is a common characteristic which breeders and judges agree should not be more than four inches long. The first type of primate I observed was a Bolivian Grey Titi Monkey which is a type of new world monkey species found in areas of eastern Bolivia and also can be found in Brazil. The scientific term for this species is Callicebus donacophilus. These types of monkeys have medium sized body structures and do not exhibit sexual dimorphism between male and females. The Grey titi monkey is diurnal making them mostly active during the day. They are also arboreal, which means that this species spends most of its life living in the trees. I noticed that this type of monkey is able to travel around on the ground and move throughout the trees very quickly. Since they are able to move around so quickly and have a sustainable life in the trees, I think that is how they avoid potential predators or larger animals that would be a threat on lower levels. The form of locomotion that they mostly use is walking, using all four limbs to support their bodies, which makes them quadralpedlic. Their diet primarily contains of fruits, leaves and insects that they forage by searching on the ground and using their hands to reach in the trees to obtain it. There is a strong bond between adults mating pairs. Evidence of the bond was observed through their behavior and proximity of the pair, while resting on a branch, I observed the pair with their tails intertwined with one another. When separated to communicate within the small range of their cage, I noticed that both used high pitch squeaks to call and find their partner. While observing…

PRIMATES share many characteristics with other animals, but they differentiate as a distinct group from other mammals with certain special features. On a CLASSIFICATION chart, a chart that organizes diversity into categories and indicates evolutionary relationships, primates are categorized under the Phylum CHORDATA, containing all VERTEBRATES (animals with segmented spinal columns), and are also split into 2 suborders: HAPLORHINI, which includes lemurs and lorises and STREPSIRHINI, which includes tarsiers, monkeys, apes, and humans. I went to the Santa Barbara Zoo and observed their primates. I looked at 2 apes: the western lowland gorilla and the white-handed gibbon and 1 monkey: the Bolivian grey titi monkey.…
