Remembering an Event In Vietnam, just like here in the United States of America there are many holidays. But Vietnamese New Year is the biggest traditional holiday of the year. It is the first and last moments of a year and it’s a time for families to gather all together on New Year Eve with the firecrackers, special food. This also is the opportunity for students like me to meet old friends after one year abroad, to embrace of lovers after a long year of waiting.

I was born in Vietnam and lived there about 26 years, so I never forget Vietnamese New Year over there. When I see the last day of the Lunar calendar, I feel emotional, happy and warm. All memories

My father and I are responsible for tidying up our house. Quickly, my house becomes splendid with a very beautiful apricot blossom full of sweet-smelling blooming flowers in the middle of living room. On the branches, we also put some lovely greeting cards which make the tree more beautiful. My mom packed Chung cakes because my mom is very skilled in packing the cakes. Thing I like the most was that my family was sitting around and watching her packing Chung cakes. Vietnamese New Year in my language is Tet. The atmosphere of Tet in my family at that time was busy and happy. My sister and I went to the market to buy some things for the New Year such as jam, watermelon, five-fruit tray, flowers, etc. I'm not a girl but I like hand-decorated tray of five fruits, bread and jam, then I made one large beautiful vases flower and put it in the living room . Although I had to do many things and became tired, I was very happy. My kitchen was full of delicious dishes with smell that floats into the air. We usually keep many kinds of food in our kitchen in the New Year festival. At lunch, we prepared a big feast to donate to the

Over thirty years have passed and many Vietnamese still do not forget that date. Why is it so persistently remembered by millions of South Vietnamese? These days in the month of April, 2008, driving around areas people can see large concentrations of Vietnamese refugee population in many American metropolitan areas. During my fifth year in elementary school, my family and I took a trip to Vietnam for the holidays. It was fascinating to experience the culture my parents were born and raised in firsthand, and even more astonishing to realize just how different the Vietnamese culture was compared to the American culture. Christmas is a prime example of how these two cultures are very dissimilar: not only decoration-wise, but also in the belief of a certain jolly old man, and the way families in each culture spend Christmas Eve and Christmas…

When it comes to America’s history, I believe there is much to be said that often is left out. Much of this I can reference back to a class that I was fortunate enough to take at Rutgers as a junior, Politics and Culture. The class had a very interesting aspect, which concerned historical memory. Historical memory can be defined as state sponsored collective memory. In order to understand this concept it is important to first understand the concept of collective memory. Collective memory is the emotional quality that is given to past events. It is not so much history based on fact, but instead how a certain society remembers their history. Essentially historical memory is a collection of narratives about the past that state-sponsored elites turn into non-negotiable facts, such as the way Loewe critiques the textbooks provided to students. These students then in turn take what the professor teaches and the textbook preaches at face value as absolute fact, essentially eradicating the possibility for negotiation and debate.…

"No matter how much suffering you went through, you never want to let go of those memories" Haruki Murakami. As Murakami said, there is a memory in my mind that even though it causes pain in my heart to remember, it is something I don't want to let go. This event in my life occured when I was 5 years old and lasted until I was a teenager. In June 1995, a month before my 5th birthday , I woke up in my bed and found a letter under my pillow; to my surprise, it was a letter from my mother saying she was leaving our home and traveling by land to The United States Of America. It had been the most difficult day of my life, and even though I was just a little girl, it made a big difference in my life compared with the life of girls my age. It was an important but painful event that taught me how to take care of myself, how to be responsable at an early age, and it showed me that in the most difficult situation I am not alone, God is with me. Even my mom and father can leave me alone, but God is always there for me.…
