Remember The Titans Film Analysis
Remember the Titans Movie Review Football: the All-American sport that can either bring people together or tear them apart. In Remember the Titans’s case, the sport of football brings white and black teenagers together with the help of two coaches – one white, one black. This is a “feel good” film that moves us by the triumph over discrimination but lacks a touch of reality. Remember the Titans takes place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971. Racism was a huge issue, and schools were starting to integrate black people into the system. Coast Yoast (Will Patton), the beloved white high school football coach, is shocked when a new black coach is sent to take over his job. Common powerful anthems from the 70’s are used to remind us of the era we’re in and to show the bond the music creates between the characters. Another great aspect is the way the movie does not strictly focus on football. For example, Louie Lastik (Ethan Suplee) is an obese white boy with some struggles concerning his grades. This movie shows how this issue brings Coach Boone and him together and creates a stronger relationship between them. The juxtaposition between Gerry and Julius Campbell (Wood Harris) is intriguing from the beginning of the movie to the end. When the boys first meet, they quickly clash and pretty much hate each other. However, when Gerry becomes paralyzed, he is only calling for one person – his “brother”, Julius. There is one thing about the movie I did not like, though. At the end, when everyone is at Gerry’s funeral, they made that scene very brief. They should’ve milked that scene a tad bit more to make the audience really feel the characters grief. Overall, this movie was very emotionally satisfying and moving. Remember the Titans focuses on overcoming racism through assimilating a football team. I would rate this film an eight and a half out of ten because the music and the attitude of the movie was great but they could’ve developed the last scene a little
