The reading and the lecture are making an argument about whether or not “Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet” is painted by Rembrandt. The author presents three reasons why Rembrandt is not the painter of this piece, while the lecturer refutes the idea and believes Rembrandt is the painter. First of all, the author claims that the woman, who is identified as a servant, in the painting is wearing a luxurious fur collar. The inconsistency of white cap makes the author argues that the painting is not painted by Rembrandt. This point is challenged by the lecturer. However, the lecturer claims that the original painting was painted on a single panel as well and that wood panel was actually enlarged to make the painting more grand and valuable. Additionally, the wood that was used in the painting is the same wood that was used in other Rembrandt’s paintings, such as the “Self-Portrait with a Hat.”
