Religion In Chronicle Of A Death Foretold
This is a story of a potentially innocent man who is murdered for the honor of a woman who lost her virginity. The story of Chronicle of a Death Foretold is written by Marquez in 1981. This story is unique because it portrays the absurdity of human nature. A man dies for no real reason. Marquez confronts us with the worst parts of society, the parts capable of murder, and doesn’t pretty it up with magical and dazzling imagery. Through the religious symbols in the novel, one can see a superficial praising of honor in Colombia.
In this novel, religion has a deluding role, however this role has reflected negativity and irony. The town in which the story takes place revolves around values that had been set hundreds of years preceding the story. In his characterization, Bayardo is described as being the perfect one to marry for his wealth and this is shown in the line:” Bayardo San Roman, for his part, must have got married with the illusion of buying happiness with the huge weight of his power and fortune, for the more the plans for the festival grew, the more delirious ideas occurred to him to make it even larger” (38). The more the readers know about Bayardo, the more his characterization becomes flat. Up to the point where he started drinking because of his insulted honor in consequence of Angela’s actions, we only know about his demonstrations of wealth which is the buying of the widower’s house. After the incident, Bayardo replaced his wife by a bottle and drank himself to death. Because of his flat characterization, the inexistence of a hypocritical belief in religion in his life can be portrayed as the cause of his death but also his innocence as a
