Relgious Imagery In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet, from the acclaimed 17th century playwright, William Shakespeare, was the story of two doomed teenafe lovers in the Italian city of Verona in the 14th century. Two families the Montauges and the Capulets are locked in a chaotic fued on the city’s streets that would prevent them from ever being together. Romeo is from the Montague family and Juliet is from the Capulet family. In this extract Romeo meets and has his first conversation with Juliet at the great hall of the Capulets. Prior to this extract Romeo has sneaked into the party and when he sees Juliet he completely forgets about Rosalina, he asks a servant who she is but he does not know who she is. Using religion Shakespeare implys that their love can be described through God and Christianity. This means that their love becomes associated with purity and passion of religon. The effect that this imagery would have on the reader, or audience, would be that they would believe Romeo and Juliet’s romance would be only driven and motivated by pure passion and not be explotation or lust. This allows Shakespeare to portary their innocence and what is really just blind and thoughtless love and this is making the feud between the families seem more and more evil and unnesscary. There is also imagery and foreshadowing into the roles that they will have in the relationship, with Romeo clearing being the one that is chasing Juliet however Juliet does not immediatly respond to Romeo advances nor does she reject or make clear that they are unwanted, she allows them to happen and at the end of the conversation she has shown herself to transform from a shy young girl into a more mature and wiser girl who knows what she desires and is clever and has the know-how on how to obtain
