Amistad, directed by Steven Spielberg, displays the fierce determination of 53 African abductees and their compelling desire to return home. Led by Cinqué (or Sengbe), a man longing to see his wife and son in Sierra Leone again, the men aboard the ship La Amistad rebelled against the Spanish slave traders who guarded them from escape. Using sugar cane knives stolen from cargo aboard the ship, the Africans defeated the gun-wielding Spaniards. With ambitions of returning to West Africa, they eventually ended up off the coast of Long Island instead of the initial destination, a Cuban port. Even as the native Africans adjusted to an entirely different life in America, their African identity still remained apparent throughout the film.…

After we finished reading the book “The Natural”, we watched the movie. After finishing up the movie, I could tell that there were many differences between the book and movie. The first difference I noticed was that there was a change in many scenes. For example, there is no car scene with Memo and Roy in the movie, Roy is a right fielder instead of a left fielder in the movie, and also, Iris, Roy’s “girlfriend”, is not a grandmother in the movie like she is in the book. Another important difference was that in the movie, Iris has a teenage son that is revealed to be Roy’s son too, because Roy and Iris grew up together when they were younger. This changed the movie a lot for me, because I could tell that Iris and Roy were going to end up together,…

Do the Right Thing took place in one of the hottest days in Brooklyn, New York in 1989 where race relations were the “talk of the town.”. Many people like Mookie, Sal, Da Mayor, and Mother Sister tried to accommodate with the heat, however at the end of the film Sal, the pizzeria owner and others attacked the African Americans and eventually the police ended up killing one African American. This film “presents a case for both violence and nonviolence in racial conflicts” (Haas, Christensen and Haas). Both famous and ordinary individuals, and events left their mark in history like Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcom X were the ambassadors of the black movement. These individuals invited the people to hassle out the contradictions. One ordinary…

While the path they are taking through South America is clearly a physical journey, the emphasis is on the inner journey, which is shown through Ernesto’s choices through the journey, shifting from helping himself to trying to help everyone he meets. The tendency to use others to get by suggests lack of preparation for the length and scale of the journey. There is a sense of frustration and irritation that they are not going as fast as they want to be and the many mishaps they have throughout the journey. There is also a sense of realisation as they come to notice that they may be having problems with their travels but the people they are meeting are far less fortunate than themselves and show Ernesto and Alberto that they are facing much smaller problems than the people they are meeting.…

“The Highway,” shows how one’s view on life may be dramatically changed due to such a significant event like the world ending. After receiving the message about the ending of the world, Hernando “watched the highway, but it did not move again. He doubted that it would move much for a very long time” (42). This statement shows Hernando’s reaction to the momentous news and how he begins to rethink his perspective on life. This quote also exhibits how Hernando is not rushing to do any particular tasks before he dies, displaying how his simplistic lifestyle has satisfied him. He is not necessarily anxious about the end of the world. After gaining his newly acquired knowledge, Hernando returns to his house. His wife calls out to him asking…

I had the privilege of attending the Policy Symposium workshop on Thursday at Ramapo College. They touched on immigration and a lot of what they mentioned was found in the text book Two things that both the text book and Symposium talked about was that when Immigrants get deported back to their country, they are at risk of getting raped. Women have a higher risk of getting raped, but men also sometimes gets raped as well. Another thing that they both mentioned was if immigrant children are deported, they often go to a country that is unfamiliar territory because they have little knowledge. This was also mentioned in the movie "Underprivileged" as the main character, Thomas was deported after not being able to produce an social security number for his university.…
