In 1608, Samuel de Champlain of France led an expedition which resulted in the founding of Quebec. The French had good relationships with Natives and the colony was funded by fur trade with the Indians. In 1663, New France was no longer managed by the Company of New France, and became directly under the rule of King Louis XIV. In order to grow the population, women were sent to the colony and men migrated to the colony as indentured servants. By 1700, New France had about 15,000 settlers.…
How did the Francophones get their rights? It all started in 1608 when Samuel de Champlain founded the city of Quebec; one hundred and sixty-six years later Britain passed the Quebec Act. Lord Guy Carleton was largely responsible for the Quebec Act. The Quebec Act did many things for Francophones in Quebec, it enlarged the boundaries of the province of Quebec to include Labrador, Mississippi and Ohio rivers on the west and the Aboriginal territory south of the Great Lakes. The Quebec Act also helped preserve French law and culture through religious freedom for the Roman Catholic majority and through restoring French civil law and British criminal law. Restoring those laws enabled the continued use of the seigneurial system which was used as…
In 1860, George-Étienne Cartier was one of the most powerful politicians in Lower Canada and a fervent protector of French Canadian nationality. But Cartier would work to bridge the gap between English and French Canada and become one of the leading Fathers of Confederation. Although a product of the establishment, Cartier joined the 1837 uprising against British authority. Cartier was a member of the Patriots - a group of mainly French and Irish Canadians opposed to arbitrary rule by the colonial administration. Cartier had fought in the battle of St. Denis. Cartier was charged with treason for his part in the Rebellion and fled to the United States. There, the rebel had a change of heart and wrote to the colonial governor, swearing his allegiance to the Queen.Cartier ran for office in 1848 at the age of 34 and was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of United Canada. It would mark the beginning of a long, illustrious career in politics. Cartier worked tirelessly for his constituents and French Canada; rewriting property laws; creating a modern civil code; setting up primary schools for Catholics and Protestants and modernizing the institutions of his province.…

In contemporary scholarship, the historiography of Quebec has been a study of great vitality, though tremendous controversy. This is particularly evident in the examination of the origins and implications of the Quiet Revolution, a period in Quebec history that is not only arguably marked by a large-scale rejection of past values and rapid modernization, but also by a subsequent paradigm shift in Quebec’s historiography, one that moved from a traditional understanding of Quebec as a distinct entity to a more contemporary perception of Quebec that attempts to “normalize” Quebec’s past by describing its provincial development as being in conjunction with the rest of Western society.…
All through his career in politics, Pierre Trudeau was able to introduce skills through which he was able to break all the barrier. It’s evident that Pierre Trudeau was an ideal political figure in Canada because he progressively fought to keep Quebec in Canada, helped the growth of Canada’s independence internationally, and passed many acts and laws that guaranteed the safety and freedom of Canadians. Therefore, Pierre Elliot Trudeau was the most significant post-WWII prime minister because his innovative policies assisted the growth of Canada as a…
The government’s rhetoric shows that it will pursue more policing and spying on Muslims. This will further alienate the Muslim community. It also gives radical preachers even more power to vend the idea that Canada and the West are at war with Muslims and Islam. Put differently, Harper’s security-heavy approach actually makes Canadians less safe.…
"It is what we prevent, rather than what we do that counts most in Government." (Mackenzie King august 26, 1936) This statement sums up the best secrets of Mackenzie King's success as prime minister, and perhaps, the key to governing Canada effectively. King's record of prime minister is sometimes difficult to judge. He had no uninteresting images, he gave no repetitive speeches, and he champions no drastic stage. He is remembered for his easygoing, passive compromise and conciliation (Gregory, page 267). Yet Mackenzie King led Canada for a total of twenty-two years, through half the Depression and all of the Second World War. Like every other prime minister, he had to possess ambition, endurance and determination to become prime minister and, in spite if appearances, his accomplishments in that role required political acuity, decisiveness and faultless judgment.…
In the past few years,Canada has acted as a peacekeeper protecting the world from major conflicts. However, Canada has also participated in numerous wars but, has chosen the path of peacekeeping rather than indulging in violent wars. According to, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, “All wars signify the failure of conflict resolution mechanisms, and they need post-war rebuilding of faith, trust and confidence”(Source, 2019). During the post war period, Canada has used political and negotiative methods of reaching peaceful conclusions to a war. Millions of Canadians have served the country for many peaceful resolutions. Canada is initially known for its peacekeeping nation as it illustrates some main points such as, preventing war conflicts in the Suez Crisis which is the main point on how Canada as as nation became a peacekeeping nation, Canadians have participated in the…

What is the Department of National Defence? It is the largest government department in Canada in terms of government funding, and the size of the staff. The mister of National Defence is Harjit Sajjan who was newly appointed by the new prime minister of Canada Justin…
Because of its inviting attitude towards everyone, Canada attracts people from all over the world. Many come here to admire its natural beauty while some come here to settle down and start a new life. This welcoming attitude may benefit Canada’s economy but it also makes Canada vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Canada is not immune to terror attack and Canada is no stranger to it. Canada faced its first terror attack in June 23, 1985. It was an Air India flight 182. The flight was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 307 passengers and 22 crew members. Even thought it was one of the deadliest terror attack in Canada, things really started to shift after the attack on United States on September 11, 2001. Canada’s foreign policy changed a lot and it was time to put the safety first for the citizens of its country. A strong defense system and border security can stop people entering Canada who impose danger to its citizens. However, a security challenge Canada faces is its home grown terrorist. It is no easy task to monitor every single citizens of its country. Center for technology and National Security Policy National Defense University published a report in May 2008 explaining what homegrown terrorism is. Homegrown terrorism or the threat within is when an individual or a group of a country are willing to attack their own. Homegrown terrorism does not mean an immigrant who immigrated to a country and is willing to hurt the people of that country anymore. According to Canadian terrorist experts and Canadian Security and Intelligence Services (CSIS) a homegrown terrorist is most likely a lone wolf. These kind of people fail to socialize with others and are targeted by foreign terrorist groups. They recruit these lone wolves and use them to take on attacks. A homegrown terrorist can be a born citizen of the country…
In theory, the Parliament is the most important institution in the Canadian government and all members of the parliament are equal. The Prime Minister is supposed to be primus inter pares, meaning first among equals. But over the years, the cabinet has become more institutionalized and less departmentalized. Hence the Prime Minister’s power has increased over the years. Canada is the one of the most decentralized federations in the World. Power is swung away from the parliament and is more concentrated in the executive branch (Courtney, 1984: p. 241). The Prime Ministers is not too powerful in a global scale but it has substantial power within Canada. However the power of the Prime Minister can also be affected by many different factors. .…
