REL 212 Assignment 2
I was raised in a Roman Catholic family who adhered to the doctrines and traditions of this faith. As a child, I was baptized and received first Holy Communion and Confirmation. As an adult, I stayed true to the Catholic doctrine by marrying within the church and having my infant son baptized. Due to this upbringing, I find myself struggling to understand how others do not believe in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
Because of this is internal struggle to understand the absence of God in someone’s life, I decided to conduct my field research on Atheism. I wanted to gain insight into what I perceive to be a totally different perspective on religion without God as the core component of a person’s belief system. When something is bothering me or someone I love is in trouble or hurting, I gain my strength to endure and to provide support by turning to prayer. I believe that the power of this faith is what gets me through these difficult times.
As I undertook this assignment, I found myself wondering more about people who profess Atheism than I did about others who have a faith tradition to guide their daily lives and to lean on in times of trouble. For instance, if Atheists do not believe in God, what gets them through hard times? This is a central question I set out to answer in my field research. I also truly wanted to hear what Atheists wish non-Atheist would understand about them. This project really brought things into reality for me.
Discuss any misconceptions you had about the religion you researched. When I began this study, I did not know much about the Atheism. The only thing I knew was that Atheists do not believe in God. Because I had little insight into Atheism and did not have any real misconceptions, I watched a web cast and interviewed friends who were both Atheist and non-Atheist. “Atheism is the lack of belief in a deity, which implies that nothing exists but natural phenomena (matter), that thought is a property or function of

In February of 1968, H. J. McCloskey’s published an article called, “On Being an Atheist.” In this, he argues that atheism is a more comfortable, logical and realistic than theism. He mentions the evil that is in the world and how it doesn’t make any sense to find comfort in a God that purposely causes pain, disease and natural disasters. McCloskey also mentions it is unreasonable to live by faith in this world. In this article, he argues the three theistic proofs including, the argument for design, the teleological argument and the cosmological argument.…

Can any scientist tell us how the Universe came into existence? Or, how old it is? There are creatures on Earth that are still being discovered today! Perhaps, one could look at the beauty in a sunrise or sunset. Perhaps, one could believe in God when they watch their new born babies eye lashes grow over the course of a week after they’re born; it is truly amazing! God created all things with such imagination and carefulness-each living thing is amazingly unique and has a purpose on this Earth no matter how big or small that purpose may be. In my opinion, Atheism is a belief that doesn’t leave much to look forward to. Though, it may be hard to explain God’s existence because he cannot be physically seen or heard, it shouldn’t be so hard to believe that the human race was created for purpose; one that exceeds this life on…
