Ontario regulation 455/07 and the demerit point system The Ontario regulation 455/07 and the demerit system work together in order to promote safe driving on roads and to discourage dangerous activities on roads. Regulation 455/07 is a very detailed article containing rules against extreme drivers. It contains rules prohibiting stunts and racing on roads. Withing the article, stunts are defined as drivers attempting to lift one or all of the vehicle's wheels off of the road, to lose traction of one or all of the vehicle's tires while turning or to spin, to drive with the driver or any passengers out of their seats or to intentionally endanger other passengers on the highway. Racing is defined as any cars competing against, chasing, or trying to outdistance any other car. The demerit point system is designed to keep drivers from committing offences or to commit repeated offences. All drivers start with zero demerit points and demerit points accumulate as drivers are charged with convictions. The given points vary by one to seven and the extent of the punishment vary based on the magnitude of the offence. The punishment is also given based on whether the driver is a new or learning driver or if the driver is fully licensed. Newer drivers are punished more severely as the need for education and correction is essential and urgent. However, this system targets every driver on the road and is used to promote safe driving practice towards any driver on the road. The demerit point system is used to enforce safe driving and regulation 455/07 is heavily dependant on the demerit point system in order to have proper function. The regulation uses the demerit point system by removing privileges based on the severity or consistency of the offence. This aids in preventing offenders from repeating their offences as the offence will become more severe as they are charged a second time.
