I am currently completing my third year at Ryerson University in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program, working towards my ultimate goal of completing my BScN and becoming a Registered Nurse. My clinical experiences thus far have been in long-term care, acute care, and community care settings. Home-care has taught me how to work independently from my colleagues and focus my attention on delivering client-centred care. The home-care environment exposed me to a wide variety of chronic illnesses and helped me develop excellent time-management skills, as I would have to visit on average 4 to 5 clients per shift following their set time schedules. Working as a swimming instructor provided me with a strong foundation in both communication skills and instructional strategies. This job required me to teach toddlers, children, teenagers, and adults within one shift. As a result, I learned how to communicate with individuals across the lifespan and identify areas for improvement in their swimming techniques while providing feedback in a way each client would understand. The lifeguarding aspect of the job required me to constantly scan the pool area for environmental hazards to ensure patrons remained safe while swimming.
