Access to the houses is gained through a small doorway, which would have been blocked by a slab of stone and possibly even barred as well during the night, which goes to show how important security was to the dwellers (BBC, 2014,1) The houses, made of sandstone slabs, also used earth sheltering, sunk into the ground which would help protect them from harsh winter climates. Because there was a lack of trees on the island, all the furniture had to be made of stone. (Britnnica, 2014,1) Each also fallowed a standard plan, all identical, with the stone- build furniture including cupboards, dressers, seats, and storage boxes; these all laid out in a formal manner.…

We were all sucked dry from the sun that day with zero energy left, we scavenged what we could and we still ate better than we could have at any local dinner. The day was still long and was only going to get hotter and longer even as the day came to a close. There was more things to do around the land than there was at any theme park. So as we all sat around and waited for something to do you could tell that everyone was thinking the same thing as sweat poured down all of our faces. The cold spring fed creek was the only thing that was going through my mind and I knew that was the only thing going through anyone else’s. We walked down to the creek as there was no other way that you could reach it, and as we got closer and closer you could hear the light eco of the fifteen foot waterfall coming off of the trees. The only thing I was looking for was the spit of the water flowing up through the large oak and misquote tree branches. You knew when everyone saw the water, you could see the sight of the crystal clear water shining off of everyones eyes and you could tell that there was a sudden sign of relief that came upon everyone after the long walk through the large misquote trees avoiding as many thorns and cactuses as they possibly could, being careful as could be you weren't going to miss all of them. And there was no better feeling than soaking your wounds in that…

    1. The Little Refugee is a multimedia text. This book is a great example of belonging due to the representation of Anh Do and his family moving from Vietnam to Australia and belonging into the Australian culture. I chose this article because of the several aspects of belonging represented in this text. These aspects include social belonging, cultural belonging and just the overall acceptance in a new country. Anh has many difficulties during his life in Australia but with his parent’s encouragement he succeeds and becomes the person he visualised to be.…

The early 1980s were times of tension and turmoil the government and citizens of Central America. Over one million Central Americans fled to the United States seeking political asylum due to the violence from Civil Wars in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. The militaries killed thousands of people, including Archbishop Oscar Romero and four Catholic Sisters. Along with violence, these nations also became stricken with poverty and economic depression, spurring large-scale migration to the United States.…

As an individual grows the end result is a person’s identity or sense of self. An individual’s perception of belonging is built upon their personal experiences and the affiliations they have forged within their own world. Experiences and relationships fabricate one’s personality and identity including their choice to belong, or not to belong. William Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Anh Do’s The Happiest Refugee delve into how belonging through relationships and the development of individual autonomy is influenced by personal, cultural, and social contexts, as the characters strive to identify what constitutes their own personality and sense of belonging to people and community.…

The book “Inside Out and Back Again” , a book of poetry written by Thanhha Lai, brings light to the struggles and obstacles that refugees face, which some overcome through what they love. A refugee might have a hard time leaving their homes, which might have been all they knew. Even after they have abandoned their heritage for a new hope, they risk everything to arrive in order to arrive at their new home. It seems although the hardships never end for these individuals, some facing discrimination because they are different, and new. Even though their lives may turn inside out, some, perusing what they love, can have comfort. These struggles can be present for people from all over the world,…

The refugees are more likely to have the common support in our community because of the misconceptions about homeless people being associated with drugs and other personal consequences. Refugees were once a group of human beings who were free and had rights like everybody else until they were stripped away from them, which leads us to sympathize with refugees more than with homeless people who probably ended up in such a situation because of drug abuse, disregarding their education and etc;. Also, there are organizations and charities (that includes soup kitchens and shelters) which have been built to help the homeless in Canada, but refugees do not have that opportunity unless the government do something about them and help them start anew…

    Syrian Refugees Crisis

    • 1454 Words

The Syrian Refugee Crisis is certainly a hot-button issue today. It has been the subject of major political debate in the last federal election, with many criticising the Conservative Government for its slow speed, lack of commitment, and alleged cherry-picking attitude towards refugee resettlement. The Liberal Party, meanwhile, capitalized on the emotional atmosphere following the release of the photograph of the Syrian child, Alan Kurdi, dead on a Turkish beach; they pledged to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of 2015 if elected (Levitz 2016). Comments have been made by figures from both sides of the political spectrum, some deeply emotion while others racists or prejudiced. The public has raised numerous fears, both rational and irrational, of terrorism, burdens on the welfare system, and a rise in cultural and racial tensions. Even the American Senate got involved, with senators claiming that terrorists would enter Canada as refugees then infiltrate the United States, a claim that has later been debunked (Panetta 2016).…

I believe the U.S. should accept more refugees to connect races, stop their fear of persecution, religion, political opinions. Most americans agree with U.S. help for refugees and also we can decrease disgraceful thing in America history. Refugees do not come on a whim, they come because they have situations that force them to come. In recent years, a lot of refuges have to leave Syria because of civil wars, persecutions and much violence. In this arduous situation, the other countries had to make a decision to accept or not in the country. US candidates do not agree with the argument of refugees. Donald Trump does not want the refugees to migrate to the country because they cause violence, while Hillary Clinton is willing to give them a place…

“Mom, I want to go home, I cannot live in this place anymore, I miss my school, my friends, I miss everything in Vietnam. However, I never thought about the difficulties waiting for me in the United States. It’s been almost two years since I first arrived America, adapting to its cultures.
