Reflective Essay On Social Work
Reflective practice helps us to recognise the important links between theory and practice, and to appreciate the risks of treating them as if they were separate domains with little or no connection to each other (Thompson, 2009). This statement stresses the importance of both theory and practice, and if not used together can have damaging results. By highlighting the importance of my experiences, values and beliefs within social work practice, this assignment will provide a reflective analysis of my personal profile. Demonstrating a personal and professional illustration of how self-reflection has helped with the development on the social work programme. Furthermore, demonstrating how the social work programme continuously challenges my abilities.

The care home specialised in offering care services to people with dementia and physical disabilities. Working in the care home gave me a huge insight on the daily struggles an individual with dementia and their families go through. Unfortunately a year ago my Nan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I was extremely upset and worried as I had experienced working with people with dementia in the care home. However, I didn’t let the knowledge of the disease scare me. If anything, my Nan’s diagnosis has made me want to help others even more. I found working in the care home a very rewarding job, which greatly influenced my choice to persue a career within social work; a profession in which I could help others and make a difference
Social workers invest a big part of themselves in their many different roles. The use of self is crucial for successful practice (Higham, 2006). I need to be able to understand myself, before I can begin to understand other people. Recognising that my values and beliefs, family dynamics and experiences define who I am. Also, my skills and knowledge which link closely, effect how I work with others as well as verbal and non-verbal communication, which can both interfere and help my
