Reflective Essay On Service Learning Experience
The experience I received from my service learning assignment has changed my perspective on volunteering, education, and how I manage myself and others. Volunteering with my classmates and others trying to achieve the same goal has been amazing. It was such a great experience to spend time at the Madrona Marsh to help with restoration and preservation. I was able to make a difference for the animals and native plants who call the marsh home. I did not realize how important the marsh was for the community until I was given the chance to adopt some new information. I did a lot of dead vegetation removal so storm water can freely flow into the marsh away from streets and homes. The wet vegetation can also be hazardous for the community, as it …show more content…
As I experience my service learning hours, I had the opportunity to experience some of my course themes regarding, “Choices of Successful Students”. I was able to employ interdependence from the beginning for the project to the end, as it took a team to research, schedule, and volunteer. In order to remove the dead brush efficiently, people had to pair up and work together as a team. One person would make a pile of dead vegetation, while the second person filled a wheelbarrow to dump in the recycle. Other than employ interdependence, I was able to adopt long life learning. I was able to find wisdom and value with my time volunteering. The wisdom and inspiration I received came from the beauty of the marsh, knowledge from people involved with the marsh, and the knowledge I found while researching sites. I dealt with people from who pass their passion for the marsh to me. A lot of my choices involved other aspects within myself as well like accepting personal responsibility, discovering self-motivation, implementing emotional intelligence, and believing in myself. I really valued my time at Madrona Marsh and I know the marsh valued my time as

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

At a service academy, the people that attend are there to get an education and train to be an officer in the military. They are there to gain valuable life and military skills. In my opinion, that is more appealing than any college. I want to surround myself with people that have the same goals and aspirations as me, and I believe that the Academy can provide that. During the week that I was at the Air Force summer seminar, I learned about life at the Academy. I knew going into that week, that I would either love it or hate it. Throughout the week I spent time doing physical training, going to classes, and learning about life at the Academy. After that week, I knew I wanted to attend the Air Force Academy. I knew I belonged. I want to attend…

The first service learning project I completed was in 2006 which was a participation in tutoring a year six student in the Aquinas College junior school. This tutoring was during winter. After the first week I found it difficult to complete three sport trainings a week (1 in Melville), an after school guitar lesson, a hockey game on Friday nights plus the tutoring program, I thought I was going to have to stop the tutoring and complete service learning in a different area. But after the first week of tutoring I found that tutoring became a priority, I felt that Ricardo found the tutoring much help and seemed to benefit from it. I finished the tutoring program without missing one session.…

Coming into the project I was looking forward to interviewing a veteran, at first I really wanted to interview a World War Two veteran. I thought it would be very cool to sit down and hear an untold story of a true American hero that fought in one of the most memorable, and one of my favorite wars. But as I continued to search for a World War Two veteran I couldn’t find one so I joined groups with Tyler, Jose, and Mauricio. They had then told me that we would be interviewing Tyler’s stepdad, who was currently enlisted. Of course my dream of interviewing a word war two veteran was tossed out of the window. Then I had thought about it and to hear the story of a national hero that is serving in the War on Terror currently would be pretty cool. Although I didn’t get my World War Two veteran, I was still pretty stoked about hearing our veteran’s story.…

Service Learning- Currently, the policy for service learning is this: freshman year, 10 hours, sophomore year, 10 hours, junior year, 20 hours, and senior year, 20 years. This puts more pressure on the seniors during their final year to do so many more things. They already have harder classes, and they would love to be able to take a small break. The service learning breakdown should now read: 10, 20, 20, and 10 hours individually. This would give all of our seniors more time to work on scholarship applications, college applications, and other important schoolwork that needs to be done. As seniors, we understand the struggle of trying to get all of twenty hours in this year, and it is tough to juggle this with everything else that is going…

At the center they focus on caring, strengthening and enriching families and lives. They provide inner city children between the ages of six weeks and 13 years a stimulating and engaging child care experience. They offer help for the entire family by incorporating their highly trained family development specialists along with daily volunteers so the families are able to build a solid foundation at home.…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…
