Reflective Essay: My Definition Of Leadership
My 22 of years as a Non-Commissioned Officer and 27 total years of service in the Army has shaped how I define leadership. Simply put, I believe leadership is the balancing of two competing priorities, the accomplishment of the mission and the welfare of the people that are in your charge. I see those two priorities being symbiotic because without the people I can’t accomplish the mission and if I do not have a mission then I don’t need the people. Others can probably think of a million other subcategories that help define leadership, but I believe those are the two overarching things leadership encompasses.
My future leadership goals within Troy will be limited because all of my classes will be online, but I can still be a leader by setting the example as a good role model, maintaining a high GPA, and using my experience to make the classes better during the discussions portions. As for my leadership goals for the future, I have earned the highest enlisted rank possible so there are no more grade promotions for

If I can demonstrate that I am competent in my job, a task, or on a subject to my team it builds their confidence in me as a leader and I find that I can get buy in a lot faster which in turn makes the group more productive. I strive to maintain my competence by doing things like taking college courses, attending advanced military schooling, and attending conferences that help me grow as a leader.
Loyalty, is a two way road and has to be earned by the leader and followers. As a leader I have to earn the loyalty of the team members. They need to know that I will have their backs if a situation arises where they need my support and that I am just as invested in the team as they are, kind of an “all for one and one for all” idea. If as leader I can earn the teams loyalty they will more often than not go above and beyond what is needed when I need them

To me, leadership is leading by example. My years in high school have shown me that the person who builds people up, and shows kindness is more of a leader than someone who commands and controls people. I strive to be this kind, caring person who others can look up to. As I grow older, I hope that by doing the right things, I can inspire others to do the same.…

Define leadership: Webster defines leadership as “the power or ability to lead other people” that sounds easy, but for most, there’s a lot more than that. Leaders must inspire their people to complete the mission or task. As a Deployable Team Leader (DTL) at Taclet South as a BM1, a position usually attained by Chiefs or junior officer. I was charged to ensure that my eight member team was well trained, and ready to conduct an important counter narcotic mission. As the DTL, I was the face of the Law Enforcement detachment (LEDET) to our DOD counterparts and allied navies and by leading from the front and taking a more challenging position above my pay grade. I inspired my folks to follow me by being the example of what they wanted to be on such a small team of professional law enforcement expert.…

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines leadership as: “1 the office or position of a leader; 2 capacities to lead, 3 the act or an instance of leading,” (M-W Inc, 2012). The Merriam-Webster Dictionary then defines a leader as; “1 a person who directs a military force or unit, a person who has commanding authority or influence,” (M-W Inc, 2012). This definition is particularly interesting simply for the fact that the definition of ‘leader’ is immediately associated with the U.S. Army: an attention-grabbing side note. The U.S. Army then defines leadership as “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization.” (Department of the Army, 2006)…

Leadership means many things to different people, and as a student of the Marine Corps, I have studied many of them. I know the traits, the principles, the roles, and the concepts. I have read of the greatest leaders in the world, and of ones that led their men to pointless slaughter. I have personally worked for men I would follow to hell, and ones I would feel safer around if they were locked in a cell. From all this, I have learned and absorbed, and I find on a daily basis the biggest part of leadership is simply to lead from the front.…

When most people think of leadership, they think of that coach yelling at his team before the big game, or a general talking to his soldiers before battle. In day to day life, in most circumstances, people are not getting ready to into the big game or run off into battle, so how do you lead them? The best leaders understand the difference between these circumstances are those who lead by example, the ones who have not forgotten who they are and maintain moral courage, and integrity.…

Certainly, leadership has several important and significant aspects that we should take into serious consideration if we want to form a personal definition of it. Trait theory of leadership began as early as Plato's question of "What qualities distinguish an individual as a leader?" in his masterpiece, Republic. Researchers in this field conducted over a hundred studies proposing a number of characteristics that distinguished leaders from non-leaders, like intelligence, dominance, adaptability, persistence, integrity, SES (socioeconomic status), and self-confidence.…

A leader must be confident in not only his abilities, but also in his followers’ abilities to reach the goal. A leader is humble enough to recognize value of his strengths and the need for the help of others. Instead of expecting 100% perfection, a leader must first be confident in and encourage 100% effort from each individual. Thus, a great leader will convey to his followers that each of their individual skills and abilities are absolutely critical in reaching the goal and that the leader is confident in each follower’s ability to contribute to the goal.…
