Reflective Essay
It is astonishing that my journey through English class has come to a close. My path has been a smooth and enjoyable one, and it is with great sadness that I begin to gather up the ends of my literary education. I know that I will continue to grow and develop as a critical reader/thinker throughout my life, but I will miss the educational structure that has shaped my literary understanding for the last year. I consider my greatest strengths as a writer to be my insightfulness and creative slant with which I approach my work. I understand most styles of writing and I enthusiastically grasp the text with an eagerness to understand and relate to it. I enjoyed gathering research for essays and try to explain them to my audience. Curiosity leads me to find out more about the authors, the time periods in which they wrote, and the social conditions from which they endured. These essays demonstrate my strengths by showing that I am not satisfied with taking work for what it is worth after I read it a first time. I know that not everything is apparent at surface level, and only after reviewing it and going back for more will I truly begin to see what the author is trying to say. I enjoy looking at pieces from different and creative angles in an attempt to try to comprehend them. My choices also reflect my interest in a variety of styles, as one essay focuses on a Narrative analysis and the other on athletes in school. By reading the story of Fenton and the struggles he endured, I gained insight into what immigrants go through in order to start a new life. In both essays, I have used critical strategies to pick apart the work being discussed. By dissecting the lines and passages, I have been able to pick up on details and details that have brought the focus and message of the works into finer focus. Paying close attention to detail lends itself to the particular, complicated readings that I have presented. In the Fenton essay, he was engaged in a battle

The moment I found myself sitting at my desk, confused and shocked at the grade I had been given. Being the egotistical brat I was at the time, my first thoughts were “This has to be a mistake, an obvious mistake.” I waited for the end of class, fidgeting in my seat every second, all the while reassuring myself that I could sort everything out. Finally, the bell rang loudly and after the rest of the students had shot out of their seat and headed for the door, I stood and walked over to her desk and politely inquired about my essay. She quickly looked over the first two pages then handed me back the essay with little enthusiasm. “Your writing skills need some work. You were going off subject quite a bit”, she informed me. With an ego my size, even the smallest of criticism hit me hard. I nodded and realized that I still had so much to work on, but I was oddly confident this teacher could help me. Mrs. Hoer was her name, and I began to respect her more than any English teacher I had prior. She showed me how writing is far more than just sitting down at home and trying to think of something profound that will impress a teacher. I learned that language can have endless meaning and give so much enjoyment for readers who take the time to analyze literature. Questioning an author’s credibility and their reason for writing a particular piece were things I had never been asked to do until her English class. Throughout my senior year in high school I learned more than I ever had in the class with her. The concept I had of how easy English was became shattered, and I found myself being far more open to new ideas and styles or writing. If I had not been transferred into AP English that year, I may have never gotten over myself, and would have never progressed as far as I…

I had thought that my writing was decent before I started this class, only to find out there’s an easier more effective way to pen words to a paper. A way, that maybe, people might get what you’re saying in a straightforward kind of way instead of all over! Once I found my way, I realized that I could add more to my paper without sounding so redundant. As I reflect over the fall semester, I remember the first free writing assignment we did and how I didn’t know what to write, much less how to start. Going from having my thoughts all over the place and trying to write like I text, in a hurry. This was not a good start for me, so as our classes went on and the more we’ve worked, the easier it’s become to write a paper. Even though I’ve left out my thesis on my rough drafts numerous times! Now when I write a paper the words come more freely and with a point.…

During my first writing studies class in college as an English major I feel like I have accomplished a variety of goals I once thought were unattainable. I have not only grown as a writer and a student, but as a person as well. I feel that through my experience of this English course, I have gained the knowledge and confidence it takes to step out into the real world. I learned a lot in this composition class. I learned about how to write a proper essay, the different types of essays, and how to cite sources. Depending on what kind of essay you are writing depends on what you have to have in it. There is a format for every essay but you have to make sure it is written correctly and includes everything that it is supposed to. Every part of an essay is important. It is also important to cite your sources because if you don’t say that your information is coming from someone else then that is plagiarism.…

Since joining the class and over the last semester, I have been pursuing English as a subject consequently learning the importance of brainstorming, aspects of organizing prior to writing, revising and collaborating in writing.
