Reflection On Congressional Simulation
Throughout the (last) week, we were assigned a congressional simulation. When we started the project, I had no clue what was going to happen. I understood the steps and roles in government, but I wasn’t sure how it was all going to play out with teenagers.
The first day, we were to write a letter to your Congressmen and Senators telling them what you want out of this piece of legislation. Such as specific wants, needs, or desires for the party. I was pretty basic on what I wanted, some chips and salsa (eventually the reason 5th hour got it as well), and some soda / water.
The second day, we were to create a bill for Mr. Garner’s 5th hour class. We were to make a budget, food and drinks that fit within that budget, also,as a Representative

According to David Mayhew, author of Congress: The Electoral Connection, Congress has many different functions that it performs including: “ . . .legislating, overseeing the executive, expressing public opinion, and servicing constituents” (Mayhew 2004, 8). While all these are important to the role Congress plays, the most important ability is the authority to create laws. Congress derives its power to perform its functions and to create laws, from Article I of the Constitution. Although Article I may be oft overlooked, the authority given to Congress from it is critically important to understanding legislative politics. Without structures and rules, Congress would be unable to make laws, would have little authority and could not function properly as a check to the other branches of government.…

In all of the horror of standing up and speaking in front of a crowd of thousands, I had finally reached the zenith of my juvenile existence and ascended into adulthood. The next day did not even matter, as I had achieved a victory that no one could take from me. However, I did still want to win that office, and it eventually came time for that almost dreaded moment of the big reveal of who would be the next North Carolina State Senior Beta Club President. Moreover, the minutes prior to the big reveal seemed like hours and I could feel my heart racing; but suddenly the moment had come and out of left field I heard my name announced as the next State President. Then I was overtaken with a jubilant attitude that I had never felt before and complete awe seized me as I could barely get out my acceptance speech through my ecstatic emotions, and it was during that weekend that I experienced the marvelous feeling of reaching…

Four days before our big night, a tragedy had stunned the nation. Two senior boys at Columbine High School in Colorado had embarked on a shooting spree in their school. The boys had killed 13 students and a teacher, as well as injuring more than 20 of their school mates before turning the guns on themselves. There had been some talk about it at school during the days leading up to our dance, but it seemed worlds away at the time. The preparations for the dance continued as scheduled and classes went on as usual while the television and radio continuously covered the tragedy in Colorado.…

After going through the application process, I, along with others, was selected to serve as a member. I aimed to transform the library by creating a more welcoming atmosphere and environment for my peers. With my great ideas, I felt that my input would be very valuable and that I would serve as a good asset to the council. Many people view the library as nothing more than a place to read, study, and do homework. While all of these things are amazing, there needs to be more fun and exciting activites for my peers to partake in. With teen violence and crime being such a pressing issue today, it has tainted our reputation. For some, The problem is not that they are rebellious, but are just not utilizing their minds the right way, so instead, they turn to committing crimes and wrongful acts to stay occupied. What is needed to eliminate this issue are teens who are willing to put their minds to good use in an effort to do positive, be influential and overall impact the greater good. I was persuaded to join the teen council in hopes of making these goals a reality, and to shed light on the greatness of today's…

Louie Colon Journalism pd.9 Mrs. Rasmus 11/4/08 Teenagers these days do not believe in voting because they believe there votes will not matter whether or not they did vote. They might also believe that they might not get to give their opinion on the candidate they want to be in office. Many of us especially teenagers complain about how they have no voice in politics nowadays. They are often mistaken because I believe every vote counts. If we voted we would be playing a role in the changes we want to see. Teenagers should vote because by voting for the right president, the actions that he or she makes will determine our future. We will live under the government of the president and we should be able to respect the decisions he or she makes…
