Reflection Paper No. 1 May 24, 2013 John Foppe is a successful man who owns a successful international training company with the aim to motivate leaders and workers to be of their best. He worked with big international companies such as Fortis, UniCredit, GE and many others. He authored a book titled “What’s Your Excuse?” that has been translated to six different languages worldwide.
Yes, all of these facts are common to intelligent men in a first world country. They have all the reasons to succeed and become great. But what makes him extra special is the fact that he has no arms. He was born without upper extremities. And how he grew up to be positive about life, to be perfectly able and independent, and to be successful as what he is today is the story that is worth to be pondered upon.
I saw the video of John Foppe’s life in our class and the words were like daggers hitting me hardly because I am one of those more-of-a-pessimist guys, who pitied his self easily, who envies a lot, who asks why life is unfair, and who questions why I am not the kind of man I dreamed to be. Even the movie clip left me in a state of asking why he was able to achieve a lot even with his disabilities and here comes me, with complete parts, yet of less achievement if none. I almost viewed that supposed to be inspiring video negatively. In fact I really did, until that night when I started writing this insight on a paper.
Out of insanity, I listed all my positive and my negative attitudes, and I found out that I’ve listed more positive

The first friend to be interviewed was David, who is a comedian and can portray many different characters. He is a funny and light-hearted man who met a woman in acting class, and fell in love. While watching his interview I was reminded of when I took a disability in the cinema class while attending Loras. In the early years of cinema many protagonists were portrayed as a person with a disability. This then stemmed to society where people with disabilities were viewed negatively. Although David can portray a scary character when he is performing on stage, he is in fact the complete opposite.…

So many people I know lack ambition, wisdom, and the strong desire to overcome the adversities they face and solemnly share with me and the public. I encounter and am told these personal moral dilemmas so much so that it feels as if I have been given a gift, that is of course that I am the one told, however, I feel cursed by my own disparities and troublesome childhood I was dealt, my empathy because of this is boundless, making myself one to listen and guide, I always guide.I want to judge and criticize, mock, and hate but i think of the old money way and Nick Carroway begins to muse me “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve…

For example, Naty Rico is a physically disabled Latina woman with ableism. She talks about how she was able to overcome structural barriers which favored able-body people. Her story is very interesting and I give her a lot of credit. After watching her video, I do see things differently that I did not see before and how able-body people usually do not see or are unaware of the struggles and challenges ableism people have to face and go through each day. Usually, people are unsociable who have these sort of disabilities. This is certainly not the case with Naty, who wants to educate her community and others of the challenges she faced with her physical disabilities. I also did realize until now that pity and paternalism are common with people who have ableism. Based on what I have mentioned, this is why people with ableism have constant challenges and impacts facing them daily who are…

He nullified all previous conceptions and perceptions I had of visually impaired people in particular and of the disabled in general. He exuded such a sense of independence and confidence that I had not felt myself in a long time. Also, from what I noticed, Jeevan hardly spoke of the bleak side of the disability that we had, for all this while, studied in this course i.e. Social Work Intervention with the Disabled and their Families. This is what made me want to explore his case and see what is it that keeps people like Jeevan who have been shaken by odds, keep going, and going very smoothly, becoming an inspiration for most around…
