The team was
Established 1932 in Boston Massachusetts. George Preston Marshall, the team’s founder and original owner, thought of the idea strictly as a marketing gimmick. He thought the Redskins name was funny, just as he thought the war paint and feather headdress he made the head coach wear were funny. He even had his players dress up in Indian outfits and perform during halftimes.
19321934 the team was original named the Boston Braves. In 1934 the team changed its name to the Boston Redskins. Then in 1937 when the team moved to
Washington D.C. they changed the name to the Washington Redskins.

Despite the lingering cultural and political dispute over the name Redskins, I personally do not think there is any negative implication in using it as the name of Washington’s professional football team. On the contrary, not only is Redskins a name that reflects the positive attributes of the American Indian, but it also represents the competitive spirit of the game of football.…

The Washington Redskins were originally known as the Newark Tornadoes and then the Boston Braves. Most accounts can agree that team owner George Preston Marshall changed the franchise name from the Boston Braves to the Boston Redskins in 1933 to recognize then coach, William “Lone Star” Dietz. Dietz, who claimed half-German, half-Sioux background, embraced what he perceived to be a Native American heritage.…

The United States is home of the brave, the free, and the land of opportunity. People from countries all around the world come to the United States to better themselves, or to give their children a chance at a better life. Countries of all races and skin colors have come since the land of the Americas was “discovered,” white, black, brown, and yellow. However, there is a key color missing; the color that has been her longer than any other, red. How is it that the people who have lived off the land of America for centuries before the Europeans arrived are the one race that is given the least amount of respect? After the British defeat by the Colonies in the Revolutionary War the Natives lost the last of hold on their old ways. It eliminated the Proclamation of 1763 and opened the doors to westward expansion. Now 230 years after the war Natives are forced to live in secluded “reservations” that the American government has chosen as “Indian Country.”…

In Ryan Fulda’s article, "Is the NCAA Prohibition of Native American Mascots From Championship Play a Violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act?", he introduces the controversy over having Native American mascots and symbols used by teams in college sports, and whether or not prohibiting the use of them violates the antitrust laws. In the rest of Fulda 's article, he successfully breaks down how prohibiting the use of Native American influences could be considered as a violation and how it could also be considered acceptable to prohibit the use of it. Fulda does this by using the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) history and different cases to justify both sides, as well as ending with his opinion as to why the Sherman act is not violated in a professional and unbiased way.…

With today’s world moving so rapidly into the future, it is important that we not forget our past. Our history has defined generations, instilling within them a sense of appreciation for their own traditions and cultures. The scope of impact that culture has is so large, that it even extends into the world of sports. Thousands of teams across the country derive their names and mascots from ethnic groups, predominantly the Native Americans. Though they claim to be honoring these cultures, the names given to the teams are racially insensitive because they dehumanize, oppress, and discriminate against the cultural identities of these groups.…

This controversy of using Native American mascots has been origins that are engrained deeply into Indian and Non-Indian relations. Today, there are many sports that use Indian names (The Atlantic Braves, Golden State Warriors, Chicago Blackhawks, and University of Illinois Fighting Illini) that are the center of this argument. According to The Free Dictionary a mascot is “A person, animal, or object believed to bring good luck, especially one kept as the symbol of an organization such as a sports team.” When it is used as a school symbol it represents their sports teams and its fans with pride. Through decades these teams have rallied team spirit and support.…
