Scientists understood what caused them but never understood why they occurred in different areas. Now the ability has been found that predictions can be made on where the red tides occur and what causes them to occur in specific areas. Scientists looked at models where they thought that the ecosystem was non-changing, and that’s why they were never led to believe that red tides could be something other than coincidental and random. Once scientists placed data into an EDM model (empirical dynamic model) which is based upon time, they could see that red tides were not coincidental and could predict where the strange phenomenon would occur based upon past events.
