Red Lotus Essay
Devasmita and the nun, two characters in Somadeva’s “The Red Lotus of Chastity”, employ the same concept from Machiavelli’s “The Prince”. Both Devasmita and the nun attempt to follow Machiavelli’s concept of being a lion and fox. However, only Devasmita succeeds in being both animals while the nun is merely a power hungry lion trying to dress up in a fox costume that did not fit. This concept of being a fox and lion means that to succeed in your ‘battle’ a person must be a cunning, deceitful fox and a powerful, aggressive lion both at the same time. “He should select among them the fox and the lion, because the lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot protect himself from the wolves.” (2528 Prince) In this, Machiavelli’s explains that a prince must be a lion to protect himself from outside invasion with brute force and power, however when the tables are turned and the war is one of intellect, the prince must also have within him the ability to reason and think outside of the box. Within the story Devasmita relentlessly uses Machiavelli’s concept of being both a lion and a fox. By placing her enemies in an inescapable cuckold she is able to both peek out her fox and then pounce on them with her lion. “Fetch me immediately some liquor loaded with Datura drug and go and have a dog’s-paw branding iron made”. (965) This quote is where Devasmita gives commands to her maid to prepare a trap for the merchant’s sons, which displays both her lion and her fox. Having an aggressive and vengeful side to her plan proves Devasmita is ruthless and powerful like a lion. However, she does not act in a manner of mere blatant violence. She uses her concept of the fox to first deceive her opponent with a seemingly harmless tea and then impair them with the Datura poison. The nun also uses her concept of the lion and the fox in an attempt to help out the merchant’s sons. Her plan is to be a fox to trick Devasmita into believing that she was not fulfilling

Niccolò Machiavelli suggested in The Prince that a ruler should behave as both a fox and a lion, being both loved and feared. There are clever rulers who were strategic, courageous rulers who were effective, and successful rulers who possessed both qualities. By comparing Of Mice and Men and La Strada, they both come together to a similar point. Innocent figures are usually represented by nature while the opposite is described with a condescending connotation. Weapons are used to harm things and are able to assert dominance. When asserting dominance, one might say that the dominant being is a male showing masculinity while the one being dominated is classified as being a female showing feminism. When these two archetypes conjoin, it can be analyzed as innocence is inferior to weapons as weapons can disrupt a balance of nature, which can translate to how weapons and their users are more masculine to innocent figures which can lead to their ultimate doom. Steinbeck and Fellini show a common interest in innocent figures and weapons due to the presence of both in their literary work.…

    | This is significant because Minerva’s friend Sinita had just finished badmouthing the dictator Trujillo about how he took power in a dirty way and how he had killed her entire family. After hearing that she was kind of nervous, and a little bit before the nun told her about how to deal with her period (“Complications”), this foreshadows that this is the start of the problems since her father badmouthed Trujillo as well.…

The Zen gardens appear as perfect representations of Buddhism’s “middle way.” Aesthetically pleasing to the eye, they display symmetry and diverse linear movement, yet unembellished with a limited color palate, permitting minimal mental distraction. Consequently, if the goal of Zen Buddhism is a clear mind and calm body, then the gardens pictured on the website are an exemplary space for the Zen Buddhist. However, when the gardens are inaccessible to the Zen Buddhist, koans may be more practical. Although described as illogical, the koans seem more like unconventional riddles created to bend and reform the students understanding and perception of life. Technically, by learning abstract, philosophical responses to these riddles, the Buddhist…

The first article being evaluated is Sex on the Stage of an Early Medieval Convent. The main argument being expressed deals with Hrotsvitha’s “goals to replace the secular, erotic, topics… and to instruct her audience to pursue a monastic way of life with all their strength, by way of indirect participation as audience, the convent of Gandersheim into a place of chastity and sanctity,” and how her plays rather deviated from these goals, through the use of sexual perversions(Classen 170).The more spiritually virtuous the female characters are, the greater are the sexual…

In the short story, “The Lady or the Tiger”, the accused is faced with a dilemma. Should he trust the princess whom he loves and open the door on the right she has gestured towards, or should he open the other door? One door hides a deadly tiger and the other door holds a beautiful lady. Based on the characterization of the princess in the story, the accused should choose the other door. If the princess wishes not to lose her lover to another woman, she will direct him towards death via the door behind which hides a tiger. If she loves him selflessly, she will also lose him, but to another woman rather than death. The story did not delve sufficiently into the love between the princess and the accused, so it is difficult to know how deep the love is. However, the writer has certainly given us glimpses of the princess’s jealousy and power as when he describes her as “possessed of more power, influence and force of character than anyone … “ (13) and that in relation to the lady behind one door “with all the intensity of savage blood transmitted to her through long lines of wholly barbaric ancestors, she hated the woman who blushed and trembled behind that silent door “ (14). This princess is the daughter of a semi-barbaric king and so we can suspect that much of his blood and character will be in her. She will not allow herself to lose her lover to another lovely woman. The accused will know which is stronger, the princess’s jealousy or her love, and should choose…

Littered amongst Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter verse is the comparison to a tiger. Furthermore, it is not limited to one character. Titus describes Rome as “a wilderness of tigers” (3.1.54). This is in reference to how wild and ferocious the city and its inhabitants can be. Titus, by use of this metaphor, is describing himself as a tiger. Subsequently Titus remarks that “Tigers must prey, and Rome affords no prey / but me and mine” (3.1.55-56). Titus is the tiger. He is the predator, and cannot afford to become preyed upon. This violent description of himself has not been placed upon him by another character, but rather of his own intellect. Titus is alluding to his own violent tendencies, brought on by his rage toward the events of Lavinia’s rape. These tendencies bring about an uncivilized character. The metaphor of the tiger is not limited to the Roman Andronici, but also to the Goths. The savage traits are applied to Tamora on various occasions. The first is when Lavinia is being harassed by Tamora’s sons Chiron and Demetrius; Lavinia asking “When did the tiger’s young ones teach the dam?” (2.2.142) due to the cruelty all three are showing Lavinia. Lucius, later on at the closing of the play, indicates that she is a “ravenous tiger” (5.3.194). Tamora, according to Titus’ earlier remark, “must prey,” since she too is vicious. Both the Romans and…
