After considering all of the recovery support program options to choose from I attended a Celebrate Recovery (or CR as they call it) meeting in Concord. The first thing that I noticed was that, while they are scattered throughout Northern California, the meetings were usually on a single day of the week in one city location – that is Concord only had Thursday nights, and Castro Valley only Wednesday nights, etc. The meetings are also unbelievably long, three hours in some cases. Being that I had already attended Life Ring and a slew of other 12 step options I was expecting the same format in CR and was trying to figure out what could possibly take two to three hours to complete and keep all while keeping an addict’s attention. Needless to say my curiosity was sparked.…

There are a lot of things that people can be addicted to, but I am going to stick to one, which is alcohol. When addicted to something it’s when you are being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something that is expressively or physically habit forming, especially alcohol or narcotic drugs. There is different ways that people can go get help with something that they are dependent on, well in other words addicted to. You can get help in person, over the one, and even online.…

My experience with this company has been very fulfilling and educational. A normal day in treatment for the clients I worked with was as follows: Wake up at 7:00am, medication, breakfast, showers, and chores. Then at 8:00am they have a goals/ meditation group to prepare for the day. 9:00am Clients drive to the center for treatment. 9:30am clients have study time until first group begins. 10:00am -12:00pm Clients attend various groups, while therapists meet with individual clients for one on one sessions. Lunch is from 12:00pm-1:00pm. After lunch clients attend caseload group for two hours, which is where each therapist meets with all of their clients for a group session. Clients discuss and process individual treatment plan work such as sharing their life story, reading impact letters from family members, and “negative consequences of my addiction” assignment just to name a few. After caseload, clients drive back to the residence where they are offered the option to go to the gym, watch TV, or rest before dinner. Dinner is served at 5:00pm, after dinner chores are done and clients prepare for a trip to an outside AA/NA meeting. After returning from meeting clients have phone time, medication, and free time till bedtime which is at 11:00pm during the week. There is nothing I would change about this program. Although, I am sure that the…

Over the summer of 2015, I volunteered at Harmony Hall in Bassett, Virginia. Harmony Hall is a nursing home for the elderly. I had heard about this agency during the last couple of months in my senior year in high school from my friend, Kanan Patel. She had volunteered during the winter of 2014 and she instantly fell in love with the mission, the staff, and the residents. When looking for a place to volunteer, I came to her for references, and she quickly directed me to Harmony Hall. I began working with this agency the following summer.…
