Reason for Choosing Education

The reason I have chosen to be a teacher is probably an unanswerable question. I often wonder if I chose this path or if I was destined to become a teacher. Every time I have strayed from the path of teaching I seem to find myself pulled back in. Throughout my career in education I have taught inside of classrooms, in settings without walls, in America, in Japan, and in every school setting other than elementary school. While teaching in Japan it became clear to me that I was the happiest when I was in the classroom. As I reflect on the happiest times in my life, I find that they are evenly divided between my family and classroom. Nothing is more fulfilling than seeing the lights go in a child’s eyes upon grasping a difficult principle that they are struggling with. I walk into a classroom and I feel alive and inspired to teach my students. Teaching and I are like star crossed lovers that are bound to spend a lifetime together learning, nurturing and edifying one another as long as they are together.

I am now heading down the road to become an elementary school teacher. “Why, elementary school?” you might ask. Elementary school is the last unknown for me, I have never taught as an elementary school teacher and working with K-8 children intrigues me. The challenge is there and I am chomping at the bit to get started. My ultimate goal is to become a school principal, which will take many years of dedication and schooling. The first step is to become a certified school teacher. The second step is to continue my education and get a Masters degree in Education while teaching as an elementary teacher. I might even purse a doctorate degree in education in order to achieve this as the crown of my career. Will it really be the crown I wear or will all the experiences of teaching young minds turn out to be the crown is yet to be known.

I was inspired to teach from a bad experience I had when I was in elementary school. I was in the fourth grade and had a teacher that was very unfair to her students. We never played any learning games or activities. She was very as they say "old-school". She never smiled, never greeted us at the door, and we sat at our desk until it was recess time. It was always come in, sit down and do your work. This inspired me because I did not want to be like her and I wanted to make a change in a child's life, not make him/her feel inadequate. I wanted to teach children that they can have fun while they learned.…

I want to be a teacher for several different reasons. I initially decided teaching was for me when I was in middle school. I had an amazing teacher that helped me through a lot. She made a huge impact on my life, and I knew then that I wanted to be able to do the same for other kids. I later went on to have children of my own, which gave me even more reason to become a teacher. And even with the economy the way it is today, there are actually a lot of opportunities for teaching given the wide variety of jobs a teaching degree can obtain. I also understand the responsibility that comes with teaching and that the job doesn’t end when you leave the classroom. That is why I respect the teaching field as much as I do. I know I still have a long way to go before I get to my teaching career but I feel it will all be worth it when I get there.…
