Reality or Illusion?
We are entities living in an illusory reality most people label as "real." Which is real and which is an illusion is in every individual's discretion. What we perceive as real may not be perceived by another as real. So what is real, really?

Does seeing something, smelling something, hearing something, being able to taste something, or being able to touch something, make that something real?

How can we define real? How can we define illusion?

Is real always bound by virtue of the speed of light? Whereas, the speed of light create the limitation of what we, as biological phenomenon, can at our best, grasp?

Can we know what transpires beyond light's realm?

Is seeing believing? Is the universe a lie? These questions challenge the accuracy of our perception of reality-is reality truly what we believe it to be? Our perception of reality is not always necessarily true. People often misunderstand situations and twist the truth for their convenience. Furthermore, our eyes and our brain are also easily confused and misdirected. There are many circumstances where what we believe isn’t true and our impression of the truth is far from actuality.…

    Whose Reality Essay

In the words of cognitive neuropsychologist Kaspar Meyer, “what is now clear is that the brain is not a stimulus-driven robot that directly translates the outer world into a conscious experience. What we’re conscious of is what the brain makes us be conscious of, and in the absence of incoming signals, bits of memories tucked away can be enough for a brain to get started with”. Reality for each individual differs according to their past experiences and memories, as well as what they choose to perceive to be true.…

Things-in-themselves, or reality, are “absolutely real” (Rohlf). These are things which, according to Kant, are perceivable even if no one is perceiving them. However, how is the mind to know that a thing-in-itself exists when the mind is not, at that moment, perceiving it? The answer, for the sake of Kant’s argument, is that one cannot.…

    The Materialist Theory

Some people find the Materialist view very hard to believe mainly because it is difficult to explain how secondary qualities cause ideas in one’s mine for example colour, taste, sound, heat or even pain since they do not resemble anything in the object. These individuals are of the opinion that physical objects perceived by the senses are what we perceived it to be and are ideas in our minds which does not derive from experience. Let’s have a look at heat does it really exists without we perceiving it? Most people opposing my view will argue that if they are expose to heat then pain will occur and they will experience it, most to us will say it is in them and not in the physical object that produce the heat. Experiments shows that water can feel both cold and warm at the same time if someone place both hands in warm water before each hand were subjected to cold and hot temperature individually. How can this be happening, clearly this must be an idea in their minds and not what the senses perceived. Similar experiments continued to demonstrate that taste will vary if I am sick or not, colour depends on the density of the air which it is viewed in and sound everyone knows if there are in a concert hall that is not acoustically constructed the quality will vary depending on where they sit. Therefore opponents to my view strongly believe that perception is nothing other than an idea in their minds.…

Is it possible to learn from a reality that is not real? A person has an experience that is not real, but believes it to be real. Can that person reach the same conclusions and learn the same lessons from that false experience as from an equivalent real experience? Does the human mind perceive false realities any differently compared to the true reality lived out every day? Even though a moment in time or a series of events may be imagined or made up, people learn lessons and react to these phenomena in ways that are very similar to how they would react if the events actually occurred. Most people have had the experience of being awakened in the middle of the night from a dream that they thought was real. Despite the fact that the dream is not reality, it still affects the mind in real ways and it can still provide lessons much like a real life experience does. In an article for…

    The Divided Line

The world of the visible is made up of opinion. The people in this world have some knowledge but they also lack a lot of it too. Also they are divided between those who believe and those who follow appearances. Those who follow appearances have the lowest form of knowledge. They can not make a distinction between an illusion and the real thing. For example if they are looking at say a rock and a picture of that same rock. They are unable to distinguish which one is real. They do not know that the rock itself is real and that the picture is an illusion. And if they are asked to choose which one is real, they would most likely choose the picture of the rock over the real one. In other words they would choose the illusion over the real thing.…

    Reality in Inception

Reality and illusion in the movie inception is a theme that is being debated a lot today. But what is reality and illusion anyway. Well reality is the state of what actually exists and has existed. On the other hand illusion is everything that does not exist but seems to exist. An example of an illusion is dreaming. When people dream it seems like everything they see is real but in reality it is just a hallucination. In the movie inception there have been a lot of debates on whether the last scene was a dream or not? Some say that is not a dream because the totem moves and that implies that it will fall in the near future. On the other hand some say that it is still an illusion because his kids are wearing the same close and playing in the same garden as in his memory. The last scene in the inception is not a dream because Cobb was not wearing his ring, he saw his kids and how he arrived home.…

One is direct realism. "Direct realism holds that in perceptual experience we are directly or immediately aware of an external world of physical objects existing independently of us" (Feser, 2006). In this view of Chelsea's situation, the senses definitely come into play. One can argue that since she saw the Spellbinder and the magic eye, and touched the artifact, that the experience was real. But according to indirect realism, it is possible that even though she was seeing, and feeling things, she had no direct contact with anything in her experience. For example, just because we touch a wall, it doesn't mean that it is actually there or that we are touching…

After reading Meditation 1 Of the Things Which We May Doubt, A synopsis of The Matrix, and Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave I am convinced that each one of these writings was wrote by the same person. The Matrix is completely about being in a world that is not real, kind of like being in a dream like state. Descartes’s meditation is about basically the same thing, but trying figure out what is real and what is not. Descartes’s talks about awaking from a dream and then going through the actions of waking up and then realizing that everything you just did was not even real. Plato implies that most men would want to escape the cave and see Reality as it really is. What is real and what is not? This is the same question…

What is prime reality, or in other words, what is truly real? Many people ask this question on a daily basis, without having a true sense of the question they are asking themselves. What is prime reality? There are two sides or more sides to every argument, and the question of prime reality is no different. Asking this question raises a couple other questions as well. Those are “What is external reality?” and “What is my purpose?” Naturalists and Christian Theists propose opposite claims to these questions, but who is really right? I believe that God and his creation are prime reality and also explain what external reality and the purpose of living are. To not look at both sides of an argument would create an incomplete, and possibly uneducated, answer to very important questions.…
