In my youth, I hated music. I hated how other kids my age were out having fun while I stayed home on the piano bench. I hated the monotony of completing exercises every day on the piano: twelve major scales, and thirty-six minor scales, forty-eight arpeggios, and chord progressions in twelve keys for a grand total of 108 different permutations. After all, what was the point? This wasn’t going to land me a job anywhere. Little did I know that this was my future. It is October 2015 during halftime of a football game. The band director bores through the amalgamation of fellow band students then sits behind me on the edge of the wet bleachers. He speaks rapidly to me about the upcoming musical production and the necessity of a keyboard…

As a musician creating music to me personally is a way to escape reality, if only for a few minutes. In that time your free from the worries of the world , all the sadness and tragedy, all the hate, and all the suffering dissipate as none of it has ever existed and in the present moment all that matters is expressing yourself and letting your soul take over. Just as doing a hard drug, music takes you away from reality, but unlike drugs reality doesn’t slap you in the face when you come down from your high. Sonny had a real passion for music, a passion that is common among serious musicians. When music begins to take over your life the passion and the artistry becomes real and a part of your life. “But I thought I’d never hear the end of that piano, everyday Sonny came home from school and went to the piano, after supper back to the piano, he played every day, every chance he got” (Baldwin 34). His brother chose to not make a scene of it or even bring it up to Sonny because he said he sensed that he was playing for his life. The narrator began to see music take over his brother when a letter got to him from the school that Sonny hasn’t been going to his classes. The narrator sees this as not caring about his future and self-destruction, and I disagree. I see it as knowing exactly what you want to do in life and pursuing it. I see Sonny as an artistic genius with a soul tuned to…

Roeper says, "Gerard Butler, talking out of the side of his mouth to squelch his Scottish accent, is Clyde.", as if setting aside the slight with commas lessens it somehow. Butler 's accent was not distracting to me. I didn 't know Gerard Butler was Scottish nor did the way he spoke do anything to take away from his performance in this film.…

Immediately wanting to join the band, I knew the only obstacle in my way would be convincing my parents. After all, neither one of them is musical in any way. At dinner that night, it was obvious that they were skeptical and not too keen on the idea of hearing the banging of a drum set in their home, but they ultimately gave me the chance to pursue this new-found passion. At that time, none of us could have imagined the impact that this decision would have on my life moving forward.…

English is not my first language. In fact, I didn’t learn it well enough to have a conversation until I was about 10 years old. I remember the embarrassment of being new to a country I called home after living in Mexico for years. Things changed quickly the first day of 8th grade. I remember being energetically greeted by a slender athletic man in his fifties in a muggy summer morning. The hum of the air conditioning as welcome sound as we found our seats in this room that smelled of being closed the last few months. His name was Mr. Goodman and he was, by most accounts, an “asshole.” This was a descriptor of which he was proud. Even the other faculty thought so. He was a strange man, but he had his reasons. Surprisingly, he was also one of the best teacher’s I’ve encountered to this day. He had a brutally visceral way of making you care about learning. His class would soon change the way I spoke English for the rest of my life.…

Reasons that were given for not choosing music or music education as a possible major included ‘Music is more of a hobby/Just for fun’, (15.4%); ‘More interested in (something else)’, (12.6%); and ‘Not enough money’, (4.7%). This made me realize that not only the personal, educational, environmental and musical background affects the way a person thinks, it also depends on the opinion of the person about the subject. In my situation, the student’s view on Music whether it is as a career to pursue or just a hobby, depends on their opinionand reasons. With more observations made on my community or group of study in my ethnographic fieldwork, I will be able to make my conclusion or…
