Reading Inventory Observation

During my observation in Mrs. Prieto’s class I had the chance to administer the basic reading inventory to a student. Before I administered the assessment, I took some steps in order to prepare myself for it. One of the first and crucial steps I did was researching. I first had to research how to grade and analyze the assessment. I also saw some videos on the Internet of teachers administering the assessment to their students with step by step instructions. I wanted to make sure I was well prepared just in case the student had any questions and because I wanted to feel confident while assessing the student.

The student was engaged and he also showed confidence while reading the word list and passages. There were a few times that the student got distracted or became frustrated because the words began to get complex for his grade and reading level. The administration of the assessment was successful because I was able to assess and analyze the students reading level. This assessment helps teachers develop responsive reading instruction for their students. Also, I learned it is always important to assess a student’s comprehension. It important to assess a student’s comprehension because a student might be good at pronouncing words and reading a passage orally, but the student might have trouble understanding or comprehending what he/she is reading.
